Limi Valley Trek – Embark on a culturally immersive and mystifying adventure. Through the high Himalayan terrain of Limi Valley in Nepal’s northwestern region. This 20-day journey unveils the hidden
treasures of remote and isolated rural communities. That has remained largely untouched
for generations. The trek showcases the authentic Tibetan lifestyle and culture. Intertwined with
exotic flora and fauna, amidst the grandeur of Nepal’s and Tibet’s majestic high Himalayas.

The Limi Valley Trek begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, and further to
Simikot, Humla. The trek starts with an easy hike toward Dharapori. Followed by Kermi, a
Buddhist community settlement, along the Karnali river trail. As you progress towards Yalbang,
the trail becomes increasingly secluded, leading past Muchu village and Tumkot village. Along
the way, soak in the cultural significance of the Gompas and Dzongs, and continue towards Yari
or Thado Dhunga, passing through the small Pani Palwang village.

Limi Valley Trek

Then the journey takes you to Hilsa, the first thriving town in Humla. From here, enter Limi
valley. Here visit the smallest settlement of Til and proceed deeper into the mountain country.
Thereafter, continue toward Jang, Limi’s third settlement. From here reach Chagzur Hot Spring.
Followed to Nyalu Base Camp via Nyalu Pass, and to Sheng Jungma, following the remnants of
the old Limi village route. Thereafter the trek culminates with stunning views of Nepalese and
Tibetan mountains on the route to Ding village, where you will witness the breathtaking Zhetse
valley. Lastly, the trek brings you to Simikot. Followed by a flight to Nepalgunj and to
Kathmandu.

Entry Permits and Requirements:

The following Permits are required:

  • Humla RAP Fee:

USD 50 per person (7 days) + an extra USD 10 per person per day (beyond 7 days)

  • Humla Village Development Community Fee:

           For all trekkers- USD 10 per person

Meals and drinking water:

In the Limi Valley trek, you’ll be provided with various ethnic cuisines and basic meals. These meals are prepared by the local supplement, every tourist lodge and tea house has a well-trained cook focusing on clean, hygienic, fresh, and delicious foods. The basic carbohydrates include dhindo, rice, roti, and potatoes, which go well with the various traditional cuisine. Popular snacks include locally made dairy items such as cheese, Churpi, and milk-based delicacies.

Similarly, drinking water taps are accessible with natural water supplies which are untreated, so direct use of the water is not recommended, so you may refill boiling water or cold filter water from any of the teahouses. However, if you buy a water purification tablet, chlorine drops or utilize SODIS (sunlight assisted) filtration procedures for further assurance of saving money and reducing plastic pollution.

Accommodation:

Local accommodations are available with minimal facilities, trekking lodges and teahouses are located along the trail, which provide basic meals and limited supplies, these supplies include twin sharing beds and meals. Campsites are also available along the trail with rubbish pits, toilets, and shelters providing a special opportunity for the campers.

Best Time to Visit?

The best season for trekking to Limi Valley is during the season of autumn and spring.  The months of September, October, November, April, and May are the best time to visit. These months are better in terms of visibility and climate conditions. 

During the autumn season, the months of September, October, and November are the best time for trekking in this region, as the weather is clear with great visibility and the temperature is warm.

The spring season of March, April, and May are also the best time to visit Limi Valley, the end of winter bring change in the topography of the region with varieties of blooming trees, high green pasture lands covered with wildflowers, mild temperatures, and clear weather.

Monsoon season is not favorable as the weather gets harsh and it’s hard to get around the country, so monsoon season is mostly avoided by trekkers.

In winter season the area receives high snowfall, covering most of the trail and access is denied to most of the regions of the valley.

Travel Insurance:

All clients participating in any activity must have travel insurance. Personal injury, death, hospital expenditures, repatriation fees, helicopter rescue, and any other disease covered by the insurance plan will be given, we highly advise you to acquire a comprehensive insurance plan from a trustworthy insurance company.

Passport and Visa

Every client must have a valid passport from the return date with a 6 month prior validity by the Nepalese consulate in your country or the immigration office at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

Your safety is of paramount importance to us at the Alpine Club of Himalaya. We have the absolute authority to cancel the trip or change the itinerary, when deemed necessary or when we have reason to believe your safety is at stake. Weather conditions, the health condition of a group member, natural disasters, and such, can contribute to changes in the itinerary when traveling in remote mountainous regions. In these extreme situations, we kindly request that you offer your full co-operation to the trusted leader of the group appointed by the Alpine Club of Himalaya. Itinerary

Upon arrival at the Kathmandu, Tribhuvan International Airport. A representative from the Alpine Club of Himalaya will assist you with your accommodation. Upon arriving at your hotel, rest for a while. In the evening join in for a special dinner program where you will experience excellent Nepalese cuisine.

After breakfast, head on for a full-day sightseeing tour of the Kathmandu Valley. First head towards Durbar (Palace) Square, the epicenter of religious and cultural life, an area filled with old temples and historical significance with glorious old Newari architecture. Some of the sights include Kal Bhairav, Hanuman Dhoka, Taleju Temple, Kasthamandap, and Kumari Ghar, home to the Living Goddess.

Afterward, visit Swayambhunath Stupa, one of the oldest Buddhist stupas in the world, which is majestically set high on a hill overlooking Kathmandu Valley. Thereafter proceed towards Pashupatinath Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This massive temple complex sits alongside the banks of the holy Bagmati River. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the courtyard of the temple, whereas tourists can see the temple from the eastern side of the River. Later visit Boudhanath, a Buddhist Stupa which is one of the largest in the world. This massive structure stands tall with four pairs of eyes each facing the four cardinal directions, watching for the righteous behavior of mankind and human prosperity. After exploring the valley head towards your accommodation. Later join in for a brief orientation regarding the trek.

Today, after breakfast head towards Nepalgunj. A city situated in the Terai flatlands and adjacent to the border with India. Upon your arrival at Mahendran Airport, you will experience a noticeable difference in temperature.

Nepalgunj serves as a significant financial center in the region. After the airport formalities head towards your accommodation. Later you may head on a leisurely stroll through the bustling streets of the city.

Following breakfast, head towards the airport and board a flight for Simikot, the administrative epicenter of the Humla region located in the northernmost part of Nepal. The Humla region is known for its rural and isolated environment, and as a result, the terrain transforms drastically as you approach Simikot. Despite its relative isolation, Simikot remains one of the larger and more dynamic settlements within the region.

Beyond the settlement, the sprawling Karnali River can be seen, which serves as the starting point for expeditions to Mt. Kailash and Western Tibet. The hamlet is home to Tibetan Buddhists, Thakuri, and Khas communities, all of whom are renowned for their kindness and hospitality. During the afternoon, you may explore the hamlet and visit local sacred sites. One of the most noteworthy attractions is the Bon Shaman Monastery, which has been rebuilt following its previous destruction.

Start the trek with a moderate ascent of roughly an hour from Simikot to Dharapori. Following this, you will embark on a descent alongside the Karnali River, passing through pine forests and settlements, while crossing a 3,000m/9,842ft altitude point.

You will ultimately arrive at Dharapori after a steep climb. Dharapori is a small rural community inhabited predominantly by adherents of the Hindu and Buddhist faiths. You will be camping along the Karnali riverbed on the first day of the trek.

After breakfast start the trek, following on a route that ascends alongside the Karnali River, traversing on steep slopes before swiftly descending to the fields of barley, buckwheat, rice, and potato, ultimately arriving at the settlement of Kermi.

After a brief rest head out to explore the village. Later in the afternoon, visit the historical Kermi Laikyo Gompa and Lhundrup Choeling Gompa, both located approximately 45 and 30 minutes away from the camping grounds.

Today’s first section takes you across a relatively level terrain with a mild incline section, spanning about two hours until reaching a small col with cultivations of barley and buckwheat. Next, a brief descent of approximately 20 minutes and you will cross a suspension bridge over the Sali River.

Then, traversing across inclined routes cross picturesque pine forests and high trails following the river rapids. After several more hours of trekking, you will reach Yalbang. In the afternoon explore the Namkha Khyung Dzong Monastery and attend to the monks chanting scared text and practicing rituals.

Following the high route above the Karnali River start the trek. Then, traversing along the dusty trails cross the village of Yangar. Next, following the uphill and downhill trails trek on the upper side of the Karnali valley. Following the high routes you'll arrive at Muchu village. Later on explore the Dhungkar Choezom Monastery, Humla's only Shakya Monastery.

Today you will be traversing across the wild, rugged, and rocky terrain. Start the trek gradual climbing up a steep section as you leave Tumkot. Following the secluded trail reach the small settlement of Yari. Next, after a brief walk reach Thado Dhunga.

Today, you'll head to Hilsa, nestled on the Tibetan border. As you gain altitude the environment gets barren, trees line fade away gradually. Following the high routes cross the 4620m Nara La pass. From the summit witness grand views of the landscape around. Then following the downward trail reach Hilsa.

Following the Karnali River, cross the suspension bridge, then continue north towards Limi Valley after breakfast. Snow Leopards, Himalayan Blue Sheep, and Bharals may be seen along the journey if you're lucky, you'll arrive at Manipeme in around 5 to 6 hours, where you'll set up camp for the day. The name Manipeme originates from the carvings of the Mani Mantra on enormous rocks.

Todays trek will be taking you deeper into the Limi valley. After crossing the Chenglungma caravan camp you'll travel to Cha-Sa Nam-Ka Dzong, a historically significant cave. Next following the trail cross Lamka-La pass at an elevation of 4300 meters. Then following the descending trail reach the village of Til. After a brief rest head out to explore the Kunzum Do Nag Monastery, which is said to be 300 years old. Here interact with the locals and learn about their ancient culture and traditions.

Start traversing along a downhill route for roughly an hour until you reach Tiljung. Then, following the Tagtsi Khola, the primary tributary of Karnali, you'll eventually come to a narrow valley to the east, cross another bridge and turn left from there. Finally, you will arrive in the northeast settlement of Halji in about an hour.

Today is you rest day, wake up before dawn and witness the grand views of sun rising. After breakfast head towards the Chagzue Hot Spring and soak in the aching muscles. In the afternoon hike up to Lapcha Syar, and witness splendid views of the sunset.

Start the trek early. Following the dusty trails reach Tulgling, a small which has recently been established. From here you will have two options leading to Nyalu Base Camp, you may either take a faster path across a river to the new road or take the longer, more scenic route via Tagtsi. Upon reaching Nyalu Base Camp realx and rest in the high alpine meadows.

Todays trek is long and tuff. The first few hours of the trek you will be ascend on steep sections and reach the summit of Nyalu Pass, which sits at an elevation of 4,990m/14,000ft. From the top witness grand views of Nepalese and Tibetan mountains such as Mt. Kailash, Kanjiroba, Mt. Api, and Mt. Saipal. After soaking in the breathtaking views, descend from the pass and continue down to Tshongsa's meadows and river. Following across the pasturelands you will eventually reach Sheng Jungma.

Following the left bank of the Zhestse river start climbing higher until you reach the right bank of the Zhetse. Next cross a bridge and reach Chyadok hamlet. Next after a brief walk reach Ding Village.

Today's hike starts with a gradual ascent to Langdogd Pass, which sits at an elevation of 4,550m/14,900ft. From the top soak in gorgeous views of the valley's high cliffs and mountains. After soaking in the vistas, descend steeply through juniper and birch woodland. Next, cross a creek and arrive at Lekh Dinga.

Today you will be leaving the Limi Valley. Begin the trek early in the morning, after breakfast. Following the downhill trails and crossing lush woodland and scattered settlements reach Okhreni. Then continue to Simikot on a newly built road. Upon reaching Simikot relax and rest, also celebrate your last night in the mountains.

After breakfast head towards the airport and fly back to Nepalgunj, followed by a flight to Kathmandu. Upon arriving at Kathmandu head towards your accommodation and rest. If you want, you may head on a guided tour of the city or explore on your own. Later in the evening join in for a special farewell dinner program to mark the end of your successful adventure.
