Yala Peak Climb With Gosainkunda And Helambu Trek – 16 Days

16 Days

Yala Peak Gosainkunda Helambu: Join Alpine Club of Himalaya’s trekking expedition to the peaks in Langtang Valley, a “fine, open valley, rich in flowers and grass, and flanked by great mountains…”, as described by British mountaineer and explorer HW Bill Tilman. We climb the relatively simple and non-technical Yala Peak (5550m), and from its summit, we are able to see the Shishapangma (8046m) and Gangchempo (6388m) peaks. We also explore the holy Gosainkunda Lake, and trek the remote trails of the Helambu region. The journey offers you spectacular views of snow capped Lantang Lirung, Lenpo Gang, Dorje Lakpa, and the mighty Shishapangma, the closest we can get to The Himalayas from Kathmandu Valley.

We then tour Boudhnath, one of the holiest Buddhist stupas, and the Patan Darbar square that has heritage buildings representing the four kingdoms (Kantipur, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kirtipur) in Nepal. You can do your final preparations for the trek. In the evening, you will be introduced to the rest of the group, get your equipment checked by your climbing leader, and be briefed on the trip by a representative of Alpine Club of Himalaya. Overnight in Kathmandu

We drive to Syabrubesi, a little village in the Langtang Valley, which is the starting point for treks into the valley. The 8-hour journey through pristine villages on the banks of the river Trishuli, will also enchant you with the panoramic views of of the Himalaya, including the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and the peaks of the Langtang region. Overnight in Syabrubesi.

We begin our 6-hour trek from Syabrubesi (1600m) to Lama Hotel (2470m), through oak and rhododendron forests, crossing Bhote Koshi, the upper river course of the Koshi River system in Nepal that originates from the Zhangzangbo Glacier in Tibet, and then passing the Langtang Khola river. The trail ascends gently to Rimche (2400m) through Bamboo (1960m), which lies at the bank of Langtang Khola. En-route if lucky, you may see red pandas, monkeys and bears. Overnight in Lama Hotel.

We continue ascending from Lama Hotel and enjoy the spectacular views of the mountains and several cascading waterfalls. As we reach the green meadows of Ghora Tabela, we can see the white peaks of the Langtang range. Our trail will continue to climb up the widening valley, passing a few temporary settlements used by herders who bring their livestock here during summer, while in spring, the forest here is covered with rhododendrons. We pass a Buddhist monastery before reaching the Langtang village. Overnight in Langtang village.

We climb up gradually through small villages and yak pastures, with the Langtang Lirung on the left, and the Ganchempo right ahead. We cross several small streams and moraines before reaching Kyanjin Gompa, a small monastery, and the government-operated cheese factory. We reach the Kyanjin village by lunchtime. Rest and relax the rest of the day to acclimatize to the high altitude. Overnight in Kyanjin.

We set aside today to help you acclimatize to the altitude. However, it is also recommended that we keep ourselves active by hiking around the area. Therefore, we will be visiting Lagsisha Kharka which is a good 5-6 hour long walk. Along the way, we get some great views of the nearby peaks including Dorje Lakpa and Shisha Pangma. In Kharka, which means pasture in Nepalese, we see a number of semi-permanent stone settlements where herders live during summer while tending to their yaks. Overnight in Kyanjin Gompa.

We trek along a rocky glacier trail to reach the Yala Base Camp, and we are welcomed by astounding views of Ganchenpo, Naya Kang, Tserko Ri, and Yala Peak. Upon reaching the base camp, our climbing guides will conduct a basic training on climbing techniques and teach you the right way to use the climbing gears. Overnight in Yala Base Camp.

We begin our trek to the summit early in the morning. At the summit we are greeted with panoramic views of the mighty Himalayas including Shishapangma, Dorje Lakpa, Ganchenpo, Naya Kang, Tserko Ri, Langtang Lirung and others. We head back to the base camp. Overnight in Yala Base Camp.

We return to the Langtang village.

We trek through woods, along the river, and valleys. At the Bamboo Lodge, we join an uphill trail which will lead us to the Sherpa village of Thulo Syabru. Overnight in Thulo Syabru.

Again we get to enjoy fantastic panoramic views of the Himalayas including the Annapurnas, Hiunchili, Manaslu, Ganesh, and Langtang. We follow a ridge for most part of the day and catch a glimpse of the first of the holy lakes. The third lake, Gosaikunda (4380m), is of particular religious and cultural significance to the Nepalese and is one of Nepal’s most sought after pilgrimage sites. The Gosaikunda lake is surrounded by mountains on almost all sides and has a great ensemble of nine other lakes. Every year during Janai Purnima in August, hundreds of Hindu pilgrims visit the lake for a holy bath. The large rock at the center of the lake is said to be the remains of a Shiva shrine. Overnight in Gosaikunda.

Leaving Gosainkund, our trail skirts around the lake before ascending towards the Laurebina Pass (4610m). The Helambu region begins at the Laurebina Pass and descends to the Melamchi valley, through rough trail, well marked with rock cairns. We pass through three more small lakes before reaching the pass. We climb a small hill and enjoy excellent views of the area. Our trail passes through Surajkunda, Ghopte, and forests. Overnight in Tharepati.

We trek to Timbu descending through lush rhododendron forests and pass several chortens and mani walls before reaching the beautiful Timbu villagel. Overnight in Timbu.

We drive back to Kathmandu, while enjoying the spectacular landscapes of Nepal. In Kathmandu, you may spend the day explore more of Kathmandu, shop for souvenirs, lovely pashminas, or intricate art work.
