Darjeeling is not only acclaimed as one of the best hill stations but also as the veritable paradise for the trekkers and adventure seekers. Trekking in Darjeeling is such an experience which should not be missed by any nature lover. It brings one face to face to the snow-capped mountains with the sublime grandeur of the Himalayas. More than 600 species of birds inhabit the emerald green forests, on the slopes of the mountains. When it comes to trekking around Darjeeling, it’s a sport for everyone and there is no need to be a professional climber to enjoy the magnificent grandeur of the Himalayas. In this trek, one can explore the beautiful terrain of Darjeeling and adjoining hills overlooking the majestic heights of Kanchenjunga. It climbs up through the forest of rhododendrons, magnolias, spruce and other trees of sub alpines and more than 600 varieties of orchids-the largest to be found in one geographical area in the world.
On the other hand-Sikkim, the small beautiful kingdom is situated in the eastern Himalayas. Sikkim is termed as the Switzerland of the east, a heavenly paradise on earth. It is the land of peace and tranquility and an ideal destination for trekking. Variation in altitude ranging from 200 to 8586 meters (height of Khangchenjunga), provides an opportunity to visitors to experience crossing over from sub-tropical to temperate zones, followed by alpine and high-altitude areas in a short span of time. Trekking in Sikkim has its own charm. Trails run though rich biodiversity and rich cultural life of Sikkim’s people. The treks pass by beautiful gompas, simple yet colourful hamlets and through fascinating alpine forests full of a rich variety of flora and fauna. Yuksom is an ideal take-off point for trekking. This point is invariably used as a centre of climbing and trekking expeditions by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling. The trek to Bakhim is an unforgettable experience. Dzongri at an altitude of 3,962 meters offers the visitor an excellent and unobstructed view of the Khangchenjunga Massif. It also provides a trekker with superb views of sunrise and sunset.
