Chandragiri Hills tour is a quick getaway from the bustling and noisy streets of the Kathmandu valley. Perched on the southwest side of the valley at an elevation of 2,551 meters above sea level. This tour takes you to a natural haven surrounded by temperate wilderness. Provides a fantastic panorama of the valley and the Himalayas on the backdrops from Annapurna to Everest.
Just 16 kilometers from Central Kathmandu the Chandragiri Hills feel like a whole new world, altogether. A vantage point, it was from these hills that King Prithvi Narayan Shah caught the first glimpse of a much more scenic and prosperous Kathmandu valley. That instilled the idea of annexing the valley into his kingdom. According to folklore, Prithvi Narayan Shah believed to have amassed spiritual powers for the unification process after undergoing rigorous ‘sadhana’ or meditation at these very hills.
From the base of the hill, there are two ways to the summit. One is hiking through the lush forest following a series of stone-paved stairs. Starting from Machhegaun, the base of Chandragiri Hill, and ending at the summit which takes around 3 to 4 hours. The other one is on a cable car. Opened in 2016, the Chandragiri Cable Car runs from Thankot to Chandragiri hills. Covering a distance of 2.4 km (9,095 ft) takes 9 minutes to reach the top station.
From the summit witness, the panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley dotted with concrete jungles surrounded by lush networks of rolling hills. Also, witness the part of greater Himalayan ranges from Annapurna to Everest. Visit one of the most important Hindu temples of the Bhaleshwor Mahadev, dedicated to Lord Shiva who is believed to possess wish-granting powers.
