Khokana is a traditional and small Newari village nestled in the south region of Kathmandu. Known for the production of rich mustard oil since ancient times, the area has various mustard production cottage industries. The narrow alleyways are another attraction of the region. Clusters of red houses make the village stand out on the green backdrop of hills and farmlands. Strolling along the narrow streets visit various ancient temples and get an insight into the lives of the people. Also, visit the powerhouse established in 1911 AD the first in the country. Bungamati, located about 2 kilometers from Khokana is yet another classical medieval village nestled across the Bagmati River. The region is famous for its woodcarvers. An ancient practice of carving woods was passed on by generations. Stroll the stone-paved streets and witness locals indulging in the practice. Visit various ancient temples including the Rato Macchindranth, one of the most important deities which are believed to look after the valley of Kathmandu. The region is also regarded as one of the major hubs of Tantrism in the country. Exploring the town visit the Bungamati Culture Museum, and various networks of ponds, and temples.
Tour Information:
The Bungamati and Khokana Village start around 8 a.m. Private transportation will pick you up from the Alpine Club of Himalaya or any accommodation you are staying in in Kathmandu. A short drive and eventually you will start the tour. The total time of the tour is 7 to 8 hours. After the tour is completed, you will be dropped off at your accommodation.
