The term “Ashtapad” translates to “Eight Steps” in English. Revered as one of the holiest Jain shrines, Ashtapad is believed to be the sacred location where Rishabhdeva, the first Jain Tirthankara, attained Moksha (liberation). The name signifies both the eight towering mountain peaks surrounding the area and the symbolic eight giant steps leading to the temple. When viewed from the south face of Mount Kailash, a spine-like structure resembling these eight steps becomes visible, enhancing its spiritual significance.
Location of Ashtapad
Ashtapad Jain Temple is situated at an altitude of approximately 4,900 meters, near the majestic Mount Kailash in Tibet. Pilgrims must undertake the inner parikrama (kora) of Mount Kailash to reach this sacred site. Due to its location in a sensitive and challenging area, visiting Ashtapad is considered both physically demanding and risky.
Significance of Ashtapad Jain Temple
As per Jain scriptures, Ashtapad is the hallowed site where Tirthankara Rishabhdeva attained salvation. After this divine event, his son, Chakravarti King Bharat, constructed a magnificent palace made of crystals and gemstones at the site. This palace serves as a memorial honoring Rishabhdeva’s nirvana and is deeply venerated by the Jain community.
Current Status of Ashtapad Darshan
Pilgrimage to Ashtapad was permitted until 2013. However, following a tragic incident in which a large rock fell on a vehicle, resulting in the loss of several lives, the Chinese authorities banned access to Ashtapad for safety reasons. Since then, the site has remained off-limits to pilgrims.
Despite this restriction, some tour operators claim to offer access to Ashtapad. Unfortunately, many such claims are deceptive; either these companies cancel bookings at the last minute or mislead pilgrims by taking them to other locations, falsely claiming them to be Ashtapad.
Pilgrims embarking on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra should ensure they follow ethical practices and respect the local laws to preserve the sanctity of their journey.
