The Manaslu Circuit Trek 12 Days is an exciting Himalayan adventure around Mount Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163 meters. The trek takes you through remote mountain landscapes, traditional villages, Buddhist monasteries, lush forests, dramatic river valleys, and high-altitude terrain before crossing the challenging Larkya La Pass.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu toward the trailhead and gradually follows the Budhi Gandaki River through diverse landscapes. As the trail gains elevation, the scenery changes from green hills and subtropical forests to alpine valleys surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks.
The journey reaches its highest point at Larkya La Pass, before descending toward Bimthang and Dharapani. With challenging trails, authentic Himalayan culture, and spectacular mountain scenery, the Manaslu Circuit offers an unforgettable trekking experience away from Nepal's busier trekking routes.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek follows a challenging but highly rewarding route through the Manaslu region of Nepal. The trail begins at lower elevations and gradually climbs through the Budhi Gandaki Valley before reaching the high Himalayan settlements.
The general route is:
Kathmandu → Machha Khola → Jagat → Deng → Namrung → Lho → Samagaon → Samdo → Dharamsala → Larkya La Pass → Bimthang → Dharapani → Kathmandu
The route includes a mixture of gradual trails, steep ascents, rocky sections, suspension bridges, narrow paths, and long descents. The most demanding section is the crossing of Larkya La Pass, where trekkers reach the highest elevation of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
A detailed route map should be added to the package page to help trekkers understand the trail, major villages, altitude gain, and location of Larkya La Pass.
The best time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek is generally during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons usually provide favorable trekking conditions, clearer mountain views, and more stable weather.
Spring brings warmer temperatures, blooming rhododendrons, and generally good visibility. April and May are particularly popular months for trekking in the Manaslu region.
Autumn is another excellent period for the Manaslu Trek. After the monsoon season, the skies often become clearer and the mountain views can be spectacular. October and November are particularly popular.
Winter brings very cold temperatures and possible snowfall at higher elevations. The Larkya La section can become challenging because of snow and freezing conditions.
The monsoon season brings rainfall, muddy trails, landslides, and possible transportation disruptions in the lower sections of the route.
The mountain scenery is one of the biggest attractions of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Depending on weather and your location along the trail, you may see:
Mount Manaslu – 8,163m
Himalchuli – 7,893m
Ngadi Chuli – 7,871m
Ganesh Himal – 7,422m
Larke Peak – approximately 6,249m
Manaslu North – approximately 7,157m
Numerous surrounding peaks of the Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges
The views become especially impressive around Namrung, Lho, Samagaon, and Samdo. Mountain visibility depends heavily on weather and seasonal conditions.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek passes through a restricted trekking region, meaning trekkers must obtain the appropriate permits and follow the regulations established for the area.
The main permits generally associated with the route include:
Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for the applicable section of the route
Permit requirements, fees, trekking seasons, and restricted-area regulations can change. Alpine Club of Himalaya will arrange the applicable permits according to the current regulations for your departure. Because the Manaslu region is a restricted area, trekkers must follow the applicable rules regarding guides, groups, permits, and entry into restricted sections.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek begins with a road journey from Kathmandu toward the trailhead at Machha Khola. The drive takes you through Nepal's countryside, passing rivers, terraced fields, green hills, traditional villages, and mountain roads. Road conditions can vary depending on weather and local conditions. From Machha Khola, the trekking section begins and follows the Budhi Gandaki Valley toward Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Lho, and Samagaon.
Alpine Club of Himalaya arranges the necessary transportation according to the selected package and current road conditions.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a challenging high-altitude trek suitable for trekkers with good physical fitness and proper preparation. Most trekking days involve several hours of walking, with some days requiring longer periods on steep and uneven terrain. The highest challenge is crossing Larkya La Pass at approximately 5,106 meters.
You should prepare for:
Long walking days
Steep ascents and descents
Rocky and uneven trails
High-altitude conditions
Cold temperatures
Changing weather
Limited facilities at higher elevations
The demanding Larkya La Pass crossing
Regular hiking, walking, stair climbing, running, cycling, or other cardiovascular activities before the trek can help improve endurance. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is useful but technical mountaineering skills are not normally required for the standard Manaslu Trek.
Accommodation during the Manaslu Circuit Trek is primarily provided in local teahouses and mountain lodges.
Most teahouses offer simple twin-sharing rooms with beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. Bathrooms are generally shared, while hot showers may be available at some locations for an additional fee. As the trail reaches higher elevations, facilities become increasingly basic. Wi-Fi and charging facilities may be available in some villages but are usually limited and may cost extra. Accommodation at Dharamsala/Larkya Phedi is particularly basic due to its remote high-altitude location. A warm sleeping bag is strongly recommended for the Manaslu Circuit.
Meals throughout the Manaslu Trek are generally served at local teahouses and lodges.
Typical breakfast choices include:
Eggs
Tibetan bread
Toast
Pancakes
Porridge
Muesli
Tea
Coffee
Common meals include:
Dal Bhat
Fried rice
Noodles
Pasta
Momos
Soup
Potatoes
Vegetables
Sandwiches
Dal Bhat is one of the most popular trekking meals because it provides a filling combination of rice, lentils, vegetables, and other side dishes. Food choices can become more limited at higher elevations. Trekkers should maintain regular meals and drink sufficient water throughout the trek.
A typical trekking day begins early in the morning. After breakfast, you start walking with your guide and trekking group.
A general schedule may look like:
6:00–7:00 AM: Wake up
7:00 AM: Breakfast
7:30–8:00 AM: Begin trekking
10:00–11:00 AM: Short rest
12:00–1:00 PM: Lunch
Afternoon: Continue trekking
3:00–5:00 PM: Arrive at the teahouse
Evening: Dinner and guide briefing
The exact schedule depends on the day's route, weather, altitude, walking pace, and trail conditions.
Altitude sickness is an important consideration during the Manaslu Circuit Trek, especially as the route climbs above 3,000 meters and approaches Larkya La Pass.
Possible symptoms include:
Headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Loss of appetite
Unusual tiredness
Difficulty sleeping
Shortness of breath
To reduce the risk:
Ascend gradually.
Maintain a comfortable walking pace.
Drink sufficient water.
Eat regular meals.
Avoid excessive alcohol.
Get adequate rest.
Follow your guide's instructions.
Report symptoms immediately.
If symptoms become worse, continuing to ascend can be dangerous. Your guide will monitor your condition and help determine whether you need additional rest, descent, or medical assistance.
Travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended.
The Manaslu Circuit passes through communities with strong Gurung and Tibetan cultural influences. The upper Manaslu region has a rich Tibetan Buddhist heritage, reflected in its monasteries, chortens, mani walls, prayer flags, and prayer wheels.
Trekkers should respect local traditions throughout the journey.
When visiting monasteries and religious sites:
Dress respectfully.
Remove shoes when requested.
Ask before photographing people or ceremonies.
Walk clockwise around mani walls and chortens where appropriate.
Turn prayer wheels clockwise.
Avoid touching religious objects unnecessarily.
Keep noise low around monasteries.
Respect private homes and local customs.
The cultural experience is an important part of what makes the Manaslu Trek different from many other Himalayan journeys.
A knowledgeable guide is particularly valuable on the Manaslu Circuit Trek because the region includes restricted areas, high-altitude sections, remote trails, and changing weather conditions. Alpine Club of Himalaya provides experienced and licensed trekking guides who assist with route navigation, accommodation, local communication, acclimatization, and general trekking safety. Porters can also help carry your main luggage, allowing you to walk with a lighter daypack. The standard arrangement is generally one porter for two trekkers, depending on the selected package. Guides and porters also contribute to the local economy and provide valuable knowledge about the region's landscapes, communities, and culture.
There are limited banking facilities along the Manaslu Circuit Trek, and reliable ATM services are not available throughout the route. It is therefore recommended to carry sufficient Nepalese rupees before leaving Kathmandu.
Personal expenses may include:
Hot showers
Wi-Fi
Battery charging
Drinking water
Tea and coffee
Snacks
Laundry
Personal medication
Tips
Souvenirs
Emergency expenses
As a general preparation, trekkers may consider carrying around NPR 15,000–25,000 per person, depending on what is already included in their package and their personal spending habits.
It is better to carry some additional cash because costs can be higher at remote and high-altitude villages.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Your policy should cover high-altitude trekking and emergency medical treatment, including helicopter evacuation where applicable. Before traveling, carefully check your policy's altitude limit and exclusions.
All travelers must carry a valid passport with at least six months of validity from the date of entry into Nepal. Most foreign nationals require a tourist visa, which can be obtained either in advance from a Nepalese Embassy or Consulate or upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu.
For the most up-to-date visa information, eligibility, visa fees, and online application details, please visit the official website of the Department of Immigration, Nepal: https://www.immigration.gov.np/visa-information
Tsum Valley is a culturally rich Himalayan valley located in the Manaslu region. It is known for its Tibetan Buddhist heritage, monasteries, traditional villages, and remote mountain landscapes. Adding Tsum Valley to the Manaslu Circuit Trek requires additional trekking days and should be planned before departure.
Serang Gompa is another cultural attraction that can be incorporated into certain Manaslu trekking itineraries depending on the route and available time. Side trips add cultural and natural experiences to the Manaslu Trek, but they also increase the overall duration and physical demands of the journey.
