Rock climbing has recently gained popularity in Kathmandu. The majestic rock faces of the Mahabharat range within the valley make an ideal rock climbing destination. The natural climbing sites are suitable for all kinds of climbers ranging from beginners to experts. Just choose a climb that is best for you, and you are all set to go.
Rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding sport. It often tests a climber’s strength, endurance, agility, and balance, along with mental control. So, please be prepared before undertaking any rock climbing tours.

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park Site
A 30-minute drive from Thamel will take you to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, located 3km northwest of Kathmandu Valley. The cliffs here range from about 15m to 25m tall and have about 20 routes of varying difficulty. Most of these routes are bolted for sports climbing. Providing excellent rock climbing experience for beginners, novices, and professional climbers. As the region falls under a national park the area is home to over 318 species of birds recorded by ornithologists.
Hatti ban Site
Hatti ban is an hour’s drive from Thamel. Located in the southern parts of Kathmandu valley on the way to the holy temple of “Dhaskinkali.” Hatti ban rock climbing is a top-grade climbing site fit for skilled and professional climbers only. The cliff here has about 10 intermediate to advanced single-pitch climbing routes. Bolted with anchors at the top of each route. The limestone cliff is mostly vertical, with a couple of slight overhangs. While being physically challenging, it is a worthwhile climb bringing a sense of calmness and peacefulness to those who challenge it.
The rock climbing starts at 7 a.m. Private transportation will pick you up from the Alpine Club of Himalaya or any accommodation you are staying in in Kathmandu. A short drive to any of the locations and eventually you will start your climb. After the climbing is completed, you will be dropped at your accommodation.
