Overview

The Nepal Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour by Alpine Club of Himalaya is a thoughtfully curated 7-day spiritual journey that takes you through some of Nepal’s most revered Buddhist sites. This tour is designed for those seeking to experience the profound essence of Buddhism while exploring the rich cultural and historical heritage of Nepal. From serene hilltop monasteries to bustling ancient bazaars, and ultimately to the sacred birthplace of Gautam Buddha, this pilgrimage offers a unique blend of spiritual discovery and cultural exploration.

Your journey begins with a scenic hike to Namo Buddha, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in central Nepal. This trek takes you away from the noise of city life and into tranquil, untouched landscapes dotted with small villages and dense woodlands. Along the trail, you will witness the magnificent Namo Buddha Stupa, framed by snowcapped Himalayan peaks. At the monastery, gain insight into the rich Buddhist culture and traditions as you interact with resident monks and explore the sacred halls.

The following day is dedicated to exploring the Kathmandu Valley’s prominent Buddhist landmarks. Begin with Swayambhunath Stupa, famously perched atop a hill overlooking the valley. Wander through its complex, observe monks and devotees performing rituals, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valley and distant snowcapped peaks. Continue to Boudhanath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located along the ancient trade route to Tibet. The massive stupa, shaped like a mandala, is an important center for meditation and spiritual practice. Afterward, visit Kopan Monastery, situated on a peaceful hill in northern Kathmandu, where you can learn about monastic life and Buddhist teachings before returning to Thamel.

The spiritual journey culminates in Lumbini, the sacred birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became Buddha. A short flight from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa, followed by a brief drive, brings you to this revered pilgrimage site. The Lumbini complex is divided into three key zones: the Sacred Garden, the Monastic Zone, and the Cultural Center & New Lumbini Village. Explore the ancient Maya Devi Temple, the historic Ashoka Pillar, and numerous monasteries built by Buddhist communities from around the world. Lumbini offers a profound opportunity to connect with the spiritual roots of Buddhism and observe devotional practices that have been preserved for centuries.

The Nepal Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour with Alpine Club of Himalaya is more than just sightseeing—it is an immersive spiritual experience that allows travelers to understand and appreciate Buddhism at its core. From ancient monasteries and stupas to the tranquil landscapes of central Nepal, this tour promises a journey of reflection, learning, and cultural enrichment.

  • Travel in a Group: Traveling with a guided group offers added security, especially in unfamiliar locations. Our group sizes are kept manageable to ensure individual attention and support.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend that all participants secure travel insurance before embarking on the Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour. Travel insurance provides important coverage for unforeseen situations such as:

  • Medical Emergencies: Coverage for health issues, including accidents, illnesses, or injuries during the trip.
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Protection if you need to cancel or cut short your tour due to personal reasons, illness, or emergencies.
  • Lost or Delayed Baggage: Compensation for delayed or lost luggage, ensuring you have the necessary support during your journey.
  • Flight Delays: Compensation or support for delays or cancellations caused by airlines.

It’s important to secure comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical, cancellation, and trip interruption coverage. Alpine Club of Himalaya recommends reviewing your insurance policy thoroughly to make sure it suits your travel needs.

Passport and Visa

For international travelers, Alpine Club of Himalaya advises ensuring that your passport and visa are in order before traveling to Nepal.

  • Passport: Ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of arrival in Nepal. Make sure your passport has enough blank pages for visa stamps and entry/exit stamps.
  • Visa: Most international visitors will require a tourist visa to enter Nepal. You can obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or apply for a visa at the Nepalese embassy or consulate in your home country before your trip.

a)     The tourist visa can typically be granted for 15, 30, or 90 days.

b)     Visa requirements can change, so it’s important to check the latest information before you travel.

Make sure your visa is processed well before your travel date to avoid delays.

Environment and Climate

The Nepal Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour takes you through diverse landscapes, from the lush hills of central Nepal to the flat, fertile plains of the Terai region. The journey begins in the central hills around Namo Buddha, characterized by terraced farmlands, dense forests, and small rural villages. The environment here is tranquil and serene, providing a peaceful setting for reflection and spiritual exploration.

Kathmandu Valley, where many sacred Buddhist sites are located, has a temperate climate with green valleys, rivers, and surrounding hills. The valley’s environment is a mix of urban settlements, ancient temples, and traditional monasteries, offering a rich cultural and spiritual experience.

Lumbini, located in the southern Terai plains, has a subtropical climate with warm temperatures and flat, open landscapes. The area is characterized by agricultural fields, rivers, and scattered monasteries, giving it a calm and meditative atmosphere

Flight Delay and Cancellations

While we do our best to ensure smooth travel, sometimes flight delays or cancellations occur due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather conditions or technical issues. Here's what you can expect:

  • Flight Delays: If there is a delay in your flight, Alpine Club of Himalaya will assist in rebooking or making necessary adjustments to your schedule. You will be notified as soon as possible if there are any significant changes to the flight schedule.
  • Flight Cancellations: In the case of a flight cancellation, our team will work with you to reschedule your flight and provide you with the best alternative route. If needed, alternative road transportation (private vehicle) may be arranged to continue the tour, ensuring minimal disruption.

If your flight is delayed or canceled, we will be there to support you with any necessary changes or accommodations.

If You Cancel the Flight Options

In case you need to cancel or change your flight, the following options are available:

·       Cancellation Fees: Airlines typically charge cancellation fees based on the type of ticket purchased. Non-refundable tickets may not offer any refund, while flexible tickets may allow changes or cancellations for a fee.

·       Alpine Club of Himalaya can assist in communicating with the airlines, but cancellations or changes are ultimately subject to airline policies.

·       Rebooking: If you decide to cancel or change your flight, Alpine Club of Himalaya will help you navigate the rebooking process, ensuring your new flight schedule aligns with the tour itinerary if possible.

·       Refunds: If your flight is canceled and you're eligible for a refund, this will be processed according to the airline’s refund policies. Please note that tour fees for the Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour itself may not be refundable if the cancellation happens after a set deadline.

To minimize inconvenience, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to cover flight cancellations or changes that may affect your travel plans.
