Manaslu Circuit Trek, the strenuous trek around 8156m Manaslu, the world’s eighth highest mountain, is geographically spectacular and culturally fascinating and was officially opened to tourists in 1991. Although the high pass in this region Larkya La ( 5100m) is not difficult to cross, the trek around Manaslu is harder than most other treks since at many places the walls of Buri Gandaki Valley are perpendicular due to which there is a huge amount of wasted up and down climbs over the ridges or onto shelves to bypass cliffs. Moreover, the trail is rough and steep and it often literally hangs on a bluff high above the river.
So Manaslu Circuit Trek is not suggested to those who have the slightest tendency towards acrophobia. Most of the trek around Manaslu is in a region of strong Tibetan influence as the people here are direct successors of Tibetan immigrants who settled here in the early 1600s.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is suitable for physically fit trekkers who can comfortably walk for around 5–7 hours a day for several consecutive days. You do not need previous high-altitude trekking experience, but a good level of fitness, determination, and preparation will make the journey much easier. The trail includes steep uphill sections, rocky paths, long descents, and several days above 3,000 meters. Beginners can complete the Manaslu Circuit with a gradual pace, proper acclimatization, and suitable preparation before the trek. Regular hiking, stair climbing, cardio workouts, and walking with a backpack are good ways to prepare. The biggest challenge is crossing Larkya La Pass (5,106 m / 16,752 ft), where cold temperatures, snow, and high altitude can make the day demanding. Trekkers with existing heart, respiratory, or serious knee problems should seek medical advice before planning this trek.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek offers a quieter Himalayan experience compared with popular routes such as the Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trek. The trail takes you through remote valleys, traditional mountain villages, forests, rivers, and dramatic landscapes surrounding Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), the world's eighth-highest mountain. Because the Manaslu region is a restricted trekking area, trekkers must travel with a licensed guide and obtain the required permits. These generally include the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), along with the applicable local area fee. Our team takes care of the permit process and other necessary arrangements before you begin the trek.
The highlight and most demanding section of the Manaslu Circuit is the crossing of Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters. You will begin the day early and gradually climb through a rugged, high-altitude landscape surrounded by snow-covered peaks. Reaching the pass is a rewarding moment, with wide Himalayan views stretching across the surrounding mountains. The descent can be equally challenging, particularly after several hours of climbing, so maintaining a steady pace and following your guide's advice is important. Although it is a long and demanding day, crossing Larkya La is often the most memorable achievement of the entire trek.
The best seasons for the Manaslu Circuit Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is generally more stable, mountain views are clearer, and daytime temperatures are comfortable for trekking. Spring brings warmer conditions and colorful rhododendron forests along the lower sections of the trail. Autumn usually offers crisp mountain air, clear skies, and excellent visibility after the monsoon. Winter can bring heavy snowfall around Larkya La Pass, while the summer monsoon often causes rain, slippery trails, landslides, and cloudy mountain views. Choosing the right season can make a significant difference to your overall trekking experience.
The cultural experience is one of the most rewarding aspects of the Manaslu Circuit. The trail passes through traditional villages where Tibetan Buddhist traditions remain an important part of everyday life. You will encounter prayer flags, mani walls, ancient monasteries, chortens, stone houses, and terraced farmland as you move through the region. Places such as Namrung, Lho, Samagaon, and Samdo offer opportunities to experience the unique culture and lifestyle of the mountain communities. You can also take a side trip to Manaslu Base Camp or visit Pungyen Monastery, depending on your itinerary and available time. The scenery changes dramatically throughout the trek, from green forests and farmland in the lower valleys to dry, rugged landscapes closer to the Tibetan border.
You will stay in a 3-star hotel on a twin-sharing basis in Kathmandu and Pokhara, offering comfortable rooms and essential facilities. During the trek, accommodation will be provided in basic teahouses and mountain lodges along the trail. These lodges are simple and comfortable, with shared dining areas and basic facilities. Rooms during the trek are generally twin-sharing, while attached bathrooms may not be available at higher elevations. Some teahouses have shared toilets and washing facilities. Single rooms can be requested in Kathmandu and Pokhara, subject to availability, while single occupancy may be limited or unavailable in the higher trekking areas.
During the Manaslu Circuit Trek, you can enjoy Nepali, Tibetan, Indian as well as more common continental cuisines. Breakfast (only) will be provided during your stay in Kathmandu whereas all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be available during the trek and climb. While trekking Manaslu Circuit Trek, breakfast will be taken in the same place we stay the night. Similar arrangements can also be arranged for dinner. Lunch will be taken en route to the next destination. During the climbing session, hygienic and freshly-cooked food will be provided. There will also be welcome and farewell dinners in Kathmandu.
