Overview

The 7-day Extended Kathmandu Valley Tour offers an immersive journey into Nepal’s rich cultural heritage, ancient architecture, and breathtaking natural landscapes. This curated itinerary covers the historic cities of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur, renowned for their exquisite temples, intricate woodwork, and living traditions. Ideal for history lovers, photographers, and spiritual seekers, this tour delves deep into the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site zone known for its centuries-old Newari culture and sacred monuments.

Travelers will explore iconic landmarks such as Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, and the Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most revered Hindu shrines in the world. The tour also includes a visit to Patan Durbar Square, known for its artistic courtyards and Krishna Mandir, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square, where time seems to stand still amidst the medieval ambience and traditional pottery-making lanes.

One of the highlights of this tour is an excursion to Nagarkot, a serene hill station perched at an altitude of over 2,100 meters, offering panoramic views of the Himalayan range, including glimpses of Mount Everest on clear days. This peaceful retreat is perfect for sunrise and sunset photography and provides a refreshing contrast to the bustling cityscapes.

The journey continues with a visit to the Changu Narayan Temple, considered the oldest Hindu temple in Nepal, with its origins traced back to the 4th century. Set amidst lush surroundings, this temple is a fine example of ancient Lichhavi-era architecture. The tour also includes sacred destinations such as Dakshinkali Temple, dedicated to the fierce goddess Kali, and Budhanilkantha, home to a large reclining statue of Lord Vishnu resting on a bed of serpents.

Throughout the 7 days, guests will experience the harmonious blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions, rural village life, and the vibrant spirit of Nepalese culture. Whether strolling through age-old alleys or standing in awe before snow-capped peaks, this tour offers a comprehensive and unforgettable experience of the Kathmandu Valley’s timeless beauty.

This cultural exploration is organized by Alpine Club of Himalaya, ensuring well-guided experiences, comfortable accommodations, and personalized service throughout the tour.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Kathmandu for a heritage tour is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and the best visibility for scenic views of the mountains and cityscape. Festivals like Dashain, Tihar, Indra Jatra, and Buddha Jayanti also fall around these times, allowing travelers to witness rich cultural celebrations.

Accommodation

During your stay in Kathmandu, accommodation options range from standard 3-star hotels to luxury boutique stays, depending on your preference. The selected hotels are centrally located, providing easy access to major heritage sites. Rooms typically include private bathrooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and breakfast. Alpine Club of Himalaya ensures that your accommodation is clean, safe, and comfortable, offering a pleasant stay after your city explorations.

Transportation (Private)

All transportation for the Kathmandu Heritage Site Tour is arranged in private, air-conditioned vehicles for your comfort and convenience. From airport transfers to daily sightseeing, you’ll travel in well-maintained vehicles with professional drivers. This allows flexibility, comfort, and personalized service throughout your journey across the city’s historic landmarks.

Restrictions and Permissions While Visiting Sacred Places

When visiting religious and sacred sites in Kathmandu, there are a few important guidelines to follow:

  • Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, especially in temples and monasteries
  • Remove shoes before entering temple courtyards or shrines
  • Photography may be restricted in certain inner sanctums – always check for signs or ask your guide
  • Respect local customs and rituals, avoiding loud behavior or intrusive actions during ceremonies
  • Entry to Pashupatinath Temple is restricted to Hindus only; however, non-Hindus can view the temple complex from designated areas
Alpine Club of Himalaya’s guides will ensure you are aware of and follow all necessary protocols during the tour.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is highly recommended for all travelers visiting Nepal. A standard travel insurance policy should cover trip cancellations, medical expenses, emergency evacuations, and theft or loss of belongings. While Kathmandu is relatively safe, having insurance provides peace of mind in case of unexpected events. Please ensure that your policy is valid in Nepal and covers activities such as sightseeing and guided travel.

Passport and Visa

All travelers visiting Nepal must possess a valid passport with at least six months of validity from their date of entry. Tourist visas can be conveniently obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or applied for in advance at a Nepalese embassy. Visa fees vary depending on the duration of stay—commonly issued for 15, 30, or 90 days. Upon arrival, travelers are required to complete an immigration form and submit a passport-sized photograph. It is recommended to carry a few extra passport photos and US dollars to cover visa charges. For added convenience, Alpine Club of Himalaya is happy to assist guests with general visa information and travel documentation guidance.

Professional Tour Guide Throughout the Journey

Throughout the 7-day Kathmandu Valley Tour, you will be accompanied by a professional, government-licensed tour guide who is well-versed in Nepal’s history, art, religion, and culture. All guides provided by Alpine Club of Himalaya are experienced, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing the rich heritage of the Kathmandu Valley with travelers. Fluent in English and trained in customer service, your guide will ensure that each site is brought to life with historical context and fascinating stories. What You Should Know Before Starting This Tour

Before beginning your 7-day cultural journey through the Kathmandu Valley, there are a few important things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth, safe, and enjoyable experience. While this tour does not involve trekking or high-altitude hiking, it still includes daily sightseeing, light walking, and travel between cities and hill towns.

1. Health and Physical Readiness

This tour is suitable for travelers of all ages with a basic level of fitness. Expect moderate walking at heritage sites, uneven stone pavements in historical towns, and some uphill paths in places like Swayambhunath or Changu Narayan. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.

2. Dress Code and Cultural Respect

Nepal is culturally conservative, especially around temples and religious sites. Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is advisable during visits to Hindu and Buddhist shrines. Always ask for permission before taking photos inside temples or of locals.

3. Weather and Seasonal Conditions

The weather in the Kathmandu Valley varies with the seasons. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times to visit, offering clear skies and mild temperatures. Nagarkot and Shivapuri can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, especially during winter months, so pack a light jacket or fleece accordingly.

4. Cash and ATMs

Most major areas like Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan have ATMs and money exchange facilities. However, small vendors in villages such as Khokana and Bungamati may only accept cash. It is recommended to carry small denominations of Nepalese Rupees (NPR) for minor purchases, tips, and entry fees not included in your package.

5. Entrance Fees and Permits

Most of the sites visited on this tour are UNESCO World Heritage Sites or culturally protected zones that require entry tickets or municipality-issued permits. These include locations such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bhaktapur, Patan, Changu Narayan, and Nagarkot view tower. While Alpine Club of Himalaya covers all standard entrance fees mentioned in your itinerary, any personal donations at temples, camera fees, or optional add-ons (such as museum visits or special cultural performances) are not included unless stated otherwise. It’s a good idea to carry some local currency for these small, on-the-spot expenses.

6. Photography Etiquette

Nepal is a visually stunning country, and photography is welcome in most places. However, avoid taking pictures of people without permission, particularly in rural or religious settings. Flash photography is prohibited in many temples and monasteries.

7. Drone Usage

If you plan to use a drone, be aware that drone flights are regulated in Nepal. You will need prior approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and possibly from local municipal offices. Unauthorized drone use, especially around heritage sites, is strictly prohibited and may result in penalties.

8. Travel Insurance

Although this tour is non-strenuous, we highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance that covers trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and potential delays. Please carry a copy of your insurance policy while traveling.

9. Electricity and Connectivity

Electricity is available throughout the tour, and most hotels provide Wi-Fi access. Nepal uses 230V power supply, and plug types C, D, and M. It’s best to carry a universal adapter and a power bank for uninterrupted device charging.

10. Responsible Tourism

Respect local customs, traditions, and religious practices. Use reusable water bottles, avoid littering, and support locally owned businesses when purchasing souvenirs or dining outside. Alpine Club of Himalaya promotes eco-conscious and culturally respectful travel across all its tours.
