Overview

Temple Tour Pashupatinath-Dakshinkali-Manakamana- Bindhyabasini – Tal Barahi -Muktinath: Nepal is a Hindu majority country and one can see temples and religious shrines in every nook and corner here. Every temple holds unique stories and legends. In this Temple Tour, you will be exploring six of the major Hindu pilgrimage destination of the country. The tour takes you from the capital city of Kathmandu to the city of lakes Pokhara and towards the laps of the Himalayas to Muktinath. In a world where traditions and cultures are vanishing so quickly. Here witness various cultures true to their own.

Overview:

The trip starts with an exploration of the most important Hindu temple in Nepal. The Pashupatinath “Protector of Nepal”. The temple stands on the banks of the holy Bagmati River northeast of Kathmandu. A powerhouse of Hindu spirituality, regarded as one of the most important places of pilgrimage for the followers of Hinduism. A subtle work of architecture with its gold-plated roof, be-jeweled doors, flowered motifs, and woodcarvings of the finest quality. The square-shaped pagoda-like temple, built on a single platform of 24 meters in height, stands in the middle of an open courtyard.

The entrance of the temple is from all four sides and is decorated with gold-gilt doors. Inside the temple, there is a narrow walk engulfing the sanctum from where one can have a closer view of Shivalinga. The temple is barred to non-Hindus, but one can have a good view of the temple and surrounding it from the opposite bank of the river. After soaking in the energy of the region head on a short drive towards Dakshinkali.

Nestled on the southern outskirts of the valley. The Dakshinkali temple is regarded as “Shakti Pit” a powerhouse. The blood-soaked temple dedicated to the Goddess Kali situated at the confluence of two sacred streams in a rocky cleft in the forest is an important pilgrimage destination for Hindus. Devotes come from far and wide to offer sacrifice and prayers to the deity.

The following day head towards the city of lakes Pokhara. Along the way visit the temple of Manakamana. A short cable car ride will take you to the temple complex situated at the top of the hill. One of the most important temples in the central hills of the country. The temple is believed to have “wish-fulfilling powers”. So a large number of devotes flock to this region throughout the year. Also the temple witnesses grand views of the Trishuli and Marshyangdi river valleys and majestic views of the Manaslu, Himchuli, and Annapurna massifs to the north. After exploring the temple head towards Pokhara.

At Pokhara visit the Bindhyabasini temple. Established in the 17th century the temple is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess, Durga. Learning about the rich culture explore the temple complex. Next head towards the Tal Barahi temple, a temple situated on a tiny island in the middle of the Phewa Lake. A short boat ride leads you to the temple complex. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Established in the 18th century it is one of the oldest temples in Pokhara.

The following day the thrill continues as you will be heading on a scenic flight to Jomsom. Upon reaching Jomsom after a short ride reaches Muktinath. One of the highest located temples in the world at an elevation of 3800 meters. The temple is visited by pilgrims, devotes, saints, and yogis from all over the world. Pilgrims take baths in holy water spouts to purify their bodies before visiting the main Temple for worship. The main shrine of Muktinath is a pagoda-shaped temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Jwala Mai temple nearby has a spring and an eternal flame fed by natural gas. The pilgrimage journey to Muktinath, holy dip in the Kunda, and bath beneath 108 water spouts are believed to bring nirvana or salvation. After exploring the temple head back to Jomsom. The following day catches an early flight to Pokhara and eventually back to Kathmandu.

Head on this spiritual journey to various ancient pilgrimage destinations of the county with the Alpine Club of Himalaya.
