Muktinath Temple, located in the serene Muktinath Valley of Mustang at an altitude of 3,710 meters, is one of Nepal’s most sacred pilgrimage sites, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. For Hindus, this holy site is known as Mukti Kshetra, meaning the “place of liberation” or salvation. The temple holds deep religious significance, as it is one of the 108 Divya Desams in Sri Vaishnava tradition and is believed to have origins predating Buddhism under the ancient name Thiru Saligramam. The site houses the Saligrama Sila, considered a naturally occurring manifestation of Lord Vishnu, making it an important spiritual destination for devotees worldwide. It is also recognized as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, adding to its sacred prominence.
The central shrine of Sri Muktinath is particularly significant among the Divya Desams, being one of the eight Svayam Vyakta Ksetras—self-manifested shrines highly revered by Hindu Vaishnavas. Other shrines in this group include Srirangam, Tirupati, Badrinath, Pushkar, and a few more. The temple itself is small but spiritually powerful. The golden murti of Lord Vishnu stands approximately the height of a man, exuding divine energy. The Prakaram (outer courtyard) features 108 bull heads from which freezing cold water flows. Pilgrims bathe in these waters as part of their rituals, symbolizing purification and connection to sacred Pushkarini waters from all 108 Divya Desams, including major temples like Srirangam, Tirumala, and Vaikunta.
Muktinath also has deep symbolic connections with Hindu astrology. The numbers 12 (zodiac signs), 9 (planets), and 27 (Nakshatras), when combined with their divisions, create 108 sacred combinations, reflected in the temple’s architecture and rituals. Buddhist nuns actively participate in temple worship, highlighting the harmonious spiritual traditions of the site. The Kali Gandaki River, flowing downstream from Muktinath, is considered the source of all Shaligrams, the sacred stones used in Vishnu temples around the world.
Alpine Club of Himalaya offers a carefully organized 6-day Muktinath Jeep Yatra from Kathmandu, allowing travelers to explore this sacred site in comfort while experiencing the stunning landscapes of Mustang. With expert guidance, cultural insights, and seamless logistics, pilgrims can fully immerse themselves in the spiritual and natural beauty of Muktinath.
The Muktinath Yatra by Jeep is best undertaken during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally clear, dry, and pleasant, making the journey from Kathmandu to Mustang comfortable and the views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges spectacular. Spring is particularly vibrant, with rhododendrons and alpine flora in bloom, while autumn offers crisp skies, stable weather, and excellent visibility for photography and sightseeing.
Visiting during the monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended, as heavy rains can trigger landslides and road closures, making the Jeep journey more challenging and potentially unsafe. Winter (December to February) brings cold temperatures, especially in Mustang and at Muktinath, with the possibility of snow blocking the roads, though the skies are often clear and the mountain views are pristine for those prepared for cold weather.
Alpine Club of Himalaya recommends travelers plan their visit during spring or autumn for the best combination of safety, comfort, and scenic beauty, ensuring a spiritually enriching and visually breathtaking pilgrimage to Muktinath Temple.
The 6-Day Muktinath Yatra by Jeep is considered moderate in difficulty. Most of the journey is conducted via comfortable Jeep rides, reducing the strain of long trekking days. However, there are short uphill walks at high-altitude locations such as Muktinath Temple (3,710 meters) and some viewpoints along the Mustang route. Travelers will also encounter rough roads and uneven paths, especially in remote Mustang villages, which may require careful footing.
The tour does not involve technical climbing or high-altitude trekking over multiple days, making it suitable for a wide range of travelers, including families, solo travelers, and senior citizens. The key challenge lies in adjusting to high-altitude conditions and occasional cold weather during mornings and evenings.
Alpine Club of Himalaya designs the itinerary to balance comfort, sightseeing, and spiritual immersion, ensuring that even those with moderate physical ability can enjoy the pilgrimage safely and fully.
While the tour is jeep-based, participants should maintain basic physical fitness to comfortably manage:
Travelers are advised to:
Even though technical trekking is not required, Alpine Club of Himalaya recommends some pre-trip preparation, such as light aerobic exercises, walking on uneven surfaces, or short hikes, to enhance stamina and prevent fatigue during the journey.
With proper preparation, most travelers can complete the yatra comfortably while fully enjoying the spiritual and scenic experiences along the Mustang route.
Although the 6-Day Muktinath Yatra by Jeep involves mostly road travel, travelers will reach Muktinath Temple at 3,710 meters, which qualifies as high-altitude terrain. At this elevation, the reduced oxygen levels may cause mild to moderate altitude sickness, especially for those who ascend rapidly without prior acclimatization. Common symptoms can include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and shortness of breath. While serious complications are rare on this tour, it is essential to be aware and prepared.
Preparation Tips
By following these precautions and listening to the guidance of our experienced staff, travelers can enjoy the spiritual and scenic experience of Muktinath safely and comfortably. The combination of Jeep travel, short walks, and guided support ensures that even those new to high-altitude travel can fully enjoy this sacred pilgrimage.
Travelers visiting Muktinath are required to have proper permits to ensure a safe and legally compliant journey. Both Indian and foreign travelers need a TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card, which helps authorities monitor high-altitude visitors. In addition, a Muktinath Temple permit is required to enter the sacred areas of the temple and participate in rituals. Alpine Club of Himalaya takes care of all necessary permits before the tour begins, ensuring that travelers do not face administrative delays or issues at the site. This allows participants to focus entirely on their spiritual and cultural experience without worrying about documentation.
The Muktinath Yatra is primarily conducted via private 4x4 Jeeps, making the journey comfortable and safe even on rough mountain roads. The Jeep journey allows travelers to experience Mustang’s scenic landscapes, high-altitude deserts, and river valleys without the strain of long trekking. All transfers, including pickups from Kathmandu, local sightseeing, and trips between Mustang villages, are arranged in well-maintained vehicles with experienced drivers. Alpine Club of Himalaya ensures that all transportation is timely, reliable, and coordinated with your daily itinerary, offering a seamless travel experience across diverse terrains.
Accommodation during the 6-Day Jeep Yatra is arranged in comfortable hotels and lodges in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Jomsom, and Mustang villages. Travelers stay in 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, which provide modern amenities, clean rooms, hot showers, and central locations for sightseeing. Lodges in Jomsom and Mustang are carefully selected for comfort and safety, offering a cozy resting place after the day’s journey. Alpine Club of Himalaya ensures that accommodations are clean, secure, and conveniently located, allowing travelers to rest well before temple visits and sightseeing.
The tour includes daily breakfasts in all hotels and lodges, as well as a welcome dinner in Kathmandu. Breakfasts typically feature a combination of continental and Nepali dishes, providing energy for early morning Jeep journeys and temple visits. Lunch and dinner, outside of what is specified, are not included, allowing travelers the flexibility to explore local cuisine in Mustang and Jomsom. Alpine Club of Himalaya ensures that meals are prepared in hygienic conditions, and special dietary requirements can be accommodated with prior notice.
Safe drinking water is essential during the Muktinath Yatra, particularly at high altitudes like Muktinath Temple (3,710 meters) and Mustang villages. Travelers are advised to carry personal water bottles and refill them at reliable sources or filtered water points. While hotels and lodges provide safe drinking water, Alpine Club of Himalaya recommends using purification tablets or portable filters when venturing into remote areas. Staying well-hydrated helps prevent altitude sickness and ensures comfort throughout the journey.
WiFi is generally available in hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, though connectivity may be limited in remote Mustang villages and lodges. Electricity is available in most accommodations, but power outages can occur, especially in Mustang due to high-altitude remoteness. Travelers are advised to carry portable power banks to keep smartphones, cameras, and other devices charged. Alpine Club of Himalaya ensures that all accommodations meet basic standards for electricity and connectivity, making your pilgrimage both comfortable and convenient.
Experienced English-speaking guides from Alpine Club of Himalaya accompany travelers throughout the yatra. They provide historical, cultural, and spiritual insights at every temple and landmark, explain local customs, and assist with high-altitude adaptation. Guides ensure smooth logistics, including Jeep transfers, accommodations, and temple visits, while monitoring travelers for health and safety. Their expertise enhances the pilgrimage experience, helping travelers fully appreciate the sacred significance of Muktinath Temple and the beauty of Mustang.
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all participants. Insurance should cover medical emergencies, high-altitude evacuation, trip cancellations, and unforeseen events. While the Jeep journey reduces physical strain, altitude exposure and remote locations make emergency coverage essential. Alpine Club of Himalaya advises travelers to secure insurance before departure, ensuring protection and peace of mind throughout the pilgrimage.
All foreign travelers must carry a valid passport with at least six months’ validity. Most visitors require a Nepalese tourist visa, which can be obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, or through online application. Indian citizens can enter Nepal using either a valid passport or a government-issued ID card. Alpine Club of Himalaya provides guidance on visa requirements and document preparation to ensure a hassle-free journey from arrival in Kathmandu to the completion of the Muktinath Yatra.

Option I – Helicopter Tour to Muktinath:
For travelers seeking the fastest and most convenient way to visit Muktinath Temple, a helicopter tour from Kathmandu is an ideal choice. Within approximately 5 hours, you can travel to Muktinath and return, bypassing long road journeys. Charter options include five- and six-seater helicopters, providing a comfortable and scenic aerial view of the Himalayan landscapes, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri ranges along the way. This option is perfect for those with limited time or anyone looking for a luxurious and hassle-free pilgrimage experience.
Option II – Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom:
