Best Time to Visit
The best time to embark on the Kathmandu and Chitwan Tour is during Nepal’s autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) seasons. These periods offer pleasant temperatures, clear skies, and optimal visibility of the Himalayan ranges from Nagarkot. In autumn, the monsoon has just ended, leaving the air fresh and the landscapes lush green—perfect for both sightseeing and wildlife viewing. Spring, on the other hand, is known for blooming rhododendrons and vibrant jungle foliage in Chitwan, enhancing your safari experience. The winter months (December to February) are also good for this tour, particularly in Chitwan where the weather is mild and wildlife is more active due to cooler temperatures. While summer and monsoon (June to August) bring rain, travelers who don’t mind the occasional downpour can still enjoy the tour with fewer crowds and greener landscapes.
Weather and Environment
Nepal’s diverse geography means you’ll encounter a variety of climates during your 7-day tour. In Kathmandu Valley and Nagarkot, the weather is typically mild, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C in spring and autumn. Winters can get chilly, especially in the evenings, while summers are warmer with occasional showers. Chitwan, located in the southern Terai plains, has a subtropical climate. Expect warmer temperatures ranging between 25°C to 35°C, particularly from April to September. The environment shifts from the urban hustle of Kathmandu to the peaceful forests and wetlands of Chitwan National Park, offering a balance between cultural immersion and nature exploration. Dust masks or scarves are useful in city areas, while light, breathable clothing is recommended for jungle activities.
Meals
The tour includes daily breakfasts in Kathmandu, Nagarkot, and during transit days, while full-board meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are provided during your stay in Chitwan. In Kathmandu and Nagarkot, you’ll have the flexibility to dine at restaurants of your choice, giving you the opportunity to try diverse Nepali and international cuisines. In Chitwan, meals are typically served buffet-style at the resort, with a selection of local Tharu dishes, continental options, and fresh seasonal produce. If you have dietary preferences or restrictions, Alpine Club of Himalaya will make arrangements in advance to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience.
Drinking Water
Safe drinking water is a priority throughout the tour. While bottled mineral water is readily available and provided during long drives and sightseeing days, travelers are encouraged to carry a reusable water bottle and use purified or boiled water wherever possible to reduce plastic waste. In Chitwan and Kathmandu, most hotels and resorts offer filtered or UV-purified water. For trekking or rural travel extensions, it’s advisable to bring water purification tablets or a portable filter. Alpine Club of Himalaya promotes eco-friendly practices, and your guide can assist in sourcing clean drinking water wherever necessary.
Accommodation
Your accommodation on the Kathmandu and Chitwan Tour is thoughtfully selected for comfort, convenience, and location. In Kathmandu and Nagarkot, you'll stay at 3-star or boutique hotels, offering private rooms with attached bathrooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and warm hospitality. The Nagarkot hotel is typically situated to offer Himalayan views either at sunrise or sunset. In Chitwan, you’ll stay at a jungle lodge or eco-resort near the national park, offering close access to safari activities. Rooms are well-equipped with mosquito nets, fans or air conditioning (depending on the season), and natural surroundings for a peaceful stay. Accommodation upgrades (to 4-star or luxury categories) are available upon request.
Guides
Your journey is led by professional, licensed guides appointed by Alpine Club of Himalaya. In Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, and Nagarkot, you’ll be accompanied by experienced cultural and heritage guides who are well-versed in history, architecture, and local traditions. These guides help bring ancient temples and palaces to life through engaging stories and insights. Once you reach Chitwan National Park, your activities will be led by certified nature guides and wildlife experts, trained in animal behavior, conservation, and eco-tourism. These guides are often locals with deep-rooted knowledge of the forest ecosystem and Tharu culture. Language support, including English, is available throughout the trip.
Transportation
All ground transportation throughout the Kathmandu and Chitwan Tour is conducted in private, comfortable vehicles managed by Alpine Club of Himalaya. The type of vehicle varies depending on the group size—ranging from sedans for solo travelers or couples, to SUVs and air-conditioned vans for small groups, and tourist coaches for larger parties. This ensures a smooth and safe travel experience while allowing for flexibility in the itinerary. All vehicles are clean, well-maintained, and driven by professional drivers familiar with Nepal’s road conditions.
Travel Insurance
Although not included in the tour package, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all travelers. Your policy should cover medical expenses, trip cancellations or delays, personal liability, and theft or loss of belongings. For those adding adventure activities like white-water rafting or jungle walks, ensure your insurance covers such excursions. Alpine Club of Himalaya can provide documentation to support insurance claims if necessary, but travelers are responsible for securing their own policy before arrival in Nepal.
Passport and Visa
All foreign travelers must carry a valid passport with at least six months of validity beyond their intended departure date. Nepal offers visa-on-arrival for most nationalities at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. You can apply for a 15-day tourist visa for a small fee (payable in USD or equivalent currency). Visa extensions are possible if you decide to stay longer. To avoid delays, travelers are encouraged to fill out the online visa form before arrival via the official Nepal Immigration website and bring a passport-sized photo.
Restrictions and Permissions During Tour
The Kathmandu and Chitwan Tour does not require any special permits, but visitors are expected to respect local customs, religious sites, and wildlife regulations. At religious sites, modest dress is encouraged and shoes may need to be removed. Photography may be restricted in certain temples and near cremation ghats like those at Pashupatinath. In Chitwan, activities inside the national park are strictly regulated—guests must be accompanied by licensed nature guides, and wildlife must not be disturbed or fed. Drones require government permission and are restricted near UNESCO heritage areas and national parks. Alpine Club of Himalaya ensures all permissions and guidelines are adhered to for a safe and respectful journey.
