Overview
The 5-day Australian Camp Trek from Pokhara is one of the most scenic short treks in Nepal, ideal for travelers seeking natural beauty, cultural encounters, and panoramic Himalayan views. Starting with a drive from Pokhara to Phedi, the adventure begins with a peaceful uphill walk to Dhampus. This traditional Gurung village is nestled among terraced rice fields and lush hillsides, offering a captivating introduction to rural Nepali life. Along the trail, trekkers are treated to wide vistas of the Annapurna Mountain range, including Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the iconic Machapuchare (Fishtail) peak. The vibrant landscape, dotted with rhododendron forests and traditional stone houses, creates an unforgettable setting.
From Dhampus, the trail continues through serene forest paths leading to Australian Camp. This tranquil hilltop village is famous for its stunning sunrise and sunset views. On a clear day, the sight of the sun illuminating the snow-capped peaks of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Fishtail is nothing short of magical. The peaceful atmosphere, cool mountain air, and wide-open views make Australian Camp a perfect place to relax and take in the natural surroundings.
The journey continues toward Sarangkot, a picturesque hill station known for offering one of the best viewpoints in the Pokhara region. The walk from Australian Camp to Sarangkot is filled with lush greenery, charming villages, and views of the Pokhara Valley below. Upon reaching Sarangkot, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping panoramas of the Himalayas and the rolling hills that surround the valley. As the sun rises behind the mountains, the entire landscape is bathed in golden light — a truly breathtaking experience.
Organized by Alpine Club of Himalaya, this 5-day trek is perfect for beginner trekkers, families, or anyone with limited time who still wants to witness the grandeur of the Himalayas up close. The trek blends natural beauty, cultural immersion, and relaxing village stays — making it one of the most memorable short treks in the Annapurna region.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to do the Australian Camp Trek from Pokhara is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and the best visibility of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Mountain ranges. The trails are vibrant with blooming rhododendrons in spring and adorned with golden rice terraces in autumn. While winter (December to February) is also possible, it can be chilly, especially at higher elevations. Monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to heavy rain and slippery trails.
Accommodation
During the 5-day Australian Camp Trek, accommodation is provided in comfortable local tea houses or lodges. These are simple but cozy, offering clean rooms with twin-sharing beds and warm blankets. While basic, the tea houses along the route are run by local families and provide a welcoming atmosphere with opportunities to learn about Nepali culture and lifestyle. Some lodges may also have private rooms and hot showers available for an additional cost.
Environment and Weather
The environment along the Australian Camp Trek is lush, green, and rich in biodiversity. The trail passes through forests, farmlands, and peaceful mountain villages. Weather conditions are generally favorable in spring and autumn, with daytime temperatures ranging between 15°C to 25°C. Mornings and evenings can be cooler, especially in Australian Camp and Sarangkot. The air is fresh and the skies are usually clear, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas throughout the journey.
Drinking Water
While trekking, it is important to stay hydrated. Bottled mineral water is available at most tea houses along the route, but to minimize plastic waste, it is recommended to carry a reusable bottle and use water purification tablets or filters. Some lodges may also provide boiled or filtered water for a small fee. The Alpine Club of Himalaya encourages eco-friendly travel practices, including sustainable water use.
Meals
Meals on the trek are served at local tea houses and lodges. A variety of freshly prepared Nepali and international dishes are available, including the traditional dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), noodles, soups, fried rice, and pancakes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the trekking package. Most meals are vegetarian, but non-vegetarian options can also be arranged. The food is healthy, hearty, and cooked with fresh local ingredients.
Guide and Porter
For a safe and enjoyable experience, Alpine Club of Himalaya provides a professional English-speaking trekking guide. A porter is also assigned for every two trekkers to help carry luggage, allowing you to walk comfortably with a light daypack. Guides are knowledgeable about the region’s culture, nature, and history, while porters are experienced and reliable. Having a guide and porter ensures a stress-free and immersive trekking experience.
Permit Fees
To trek to Australian Camp, you’ll need a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card and an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). These permits are mandatory and can be arranged by Alpine Club of Himalaya. The fees contribute to trail maintenance and conservation efforts in the region. Always carry these permits with you during the trek as they are checked at various points along the route.
Passport and Visa
To enter Nepal, all foreign nationals (except Indian citizens) must have a valid passport with at least six months of validity and a tourist visa. Visas can be obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or applied for online in advance. Tourist visas are available for 15, 30, or 90 days. Ensure you bring a few passport-sized photos and the visa fee in USD or other major currencies.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended for all trekkers joining the Australian Camp Trek. Your policy should cover medical emergencies, evacuation by helicopter (if necessary), and trip cancellations or delays. Although this is a relatively low-altitude and short trek, having insurance gives you peace of mind in case of unexpected situations. Alpine Club of Himalaya advises all trekkers to arrange comprehensive insurance before traveling to Nepal.
