Overview

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek – 18 Days is one of the most rewarding and diverse trekking adventures in Nepal, combining the iconic Annapurna Circuit route with an extraordinary side trip to the stunning Tilicho Lake, one of the world’s highest glacial lakes at 4,919 meters. This extended journey is perfect for trekkers who wish to experience not only the classic highlights of the Annapurna Circuit but also the raw beauty and dramatic scenery surrounding Tilicho Lake, often described as a jewel of the Himalayas.

This trek takes you through an ever-changing landscape, beginning with lush subtropical forests, terraced fields, and traditional villages before gradually ascending into alpine meadows, barren highlands, and rugged mountain passes. The journey is filled with panoramic views of some of the highest peaks in Nepal, including Annapurna I (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Manaslu (8,163 m), Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. Each day on the trail reveals a new perspective of the Himalayas, making the adventure both visually and culturally enriching.

Another highlight of the trek is the cultural diversity you encounter along the way. The lower regions are home to Gurung and Thakali communities, known for their warm hospitality and traditional practices, while the higher Manang Valley introduces you to the unique lifestyle of the Manangi people, who have preserved Tibetan-influenced culture and traditions for centuries. Staying in local teahouses and interacting with the communities provides authentic insights into Himalayan life, adding depth to the trekking experience.

The most adventurous sections of this trek are the side trip to Tilicho Lake and the crossing of the legendary Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Visiting Tilicho Lake is both a spiritual and scenic experience, as the lake is considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists, and its turquoise waters reflect the surrounding snowy peaks in a breathtaking display. Crossing Thorong La is a challenging but deeply rewarding part of the trek, offering unmatched views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges before descending into the arid landscapes of Mustang.

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is a perfect balance of adventure, cultural exploration, and natural beauty. Whether it’s the high mountain passes, serene glacial lake, charming Himalayan villages, or diverse landscapes, every step of the journey offers something unforgettable. This trek is well-suited for adventurers looking to go beyond the classic Annapurna Circuit and explore one of Nepal’s most beautiful trekking routes, combining iconic highlights with the serene yet dramatic beauty of Tilicho Lake.

Mountain Views During the Trek

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is one of the best treks in Nepal for panoramic Himalayan views. Throughout the 18-day journey, trekkers are rewarded with ever-changing perspectives of some of the world’s highest and most beautiful peaks. From the subtropical valleys at the start of the trek to the windswept landscapes of Mustang, every day offers new and dramatic mountain scenery.

  • Annapurna Range: The trek provides outstanding views of Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna II (7,937m), Annapurna III (7,555m), and Annapurna IV (7,525m). These peaks dominate the horizon from different angles as you move along the circuit.
  • Tilicho Peak (7,134m): The side trip to Tilicho Lake offers close-up views of Tilicho Peak, which towers dramatically above the turquoise waters of the lake.
  • Dhaulagiri (8,167m): From Thorong La Pass and Mustang, trekkers are rewarded with sweeping vistas of the mighty Dhaulagiri, the world’s seventh-highest mountain.
  • Manaslu (8,163m): On the lower sections of the trek, clear weather often reveals distant but spectacular views of Manaslu, another of Nepal’s 8,000-meter peaks.
  • Gangapurna (7,454m): Seen prominently from Manang and the surrounding areas, Gangapurna with its massive glacier is a highlight of the trek.
  • Pisangs and Chulus: From Pisang and Manang, trekkers enjoy excellent views of Pisang Peak (6,091m), Chulu East, and Chulu West, which are popular climbing peaks in the Annapurna region.
  • Nilgiri and Tukuche Peaks: As the trek descends into Mustang and the Kali Gandaki Valley, striking views of Nilgiri (7,061m) and Tukuche Peak (6,920m) appear against the barren landscapes.
  • Thorong Peak and Khatungkan: The approach to Thorong La Pass rewards trekkers with close views of these peaks, creating an unforgettable high-altitude panorama.

Every section of the trek offers a new Himalayan spectacle, making the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek one of the most scenic adventures in Nepal. From close encounters with towering peaks to wide panoramas from high passes, the mountain views on this trek remain etched in memory long after the journey is complete.

Best Time to Visit Tilicho Lake Trek

The best time to trek to Tilicho Lake is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, which offer the most stable weather conditions and clear visibility in the Annapurna region. During these months, trekkers can enjoy safe trails, breathtaking Himalayan views, and pleasant walking temperatures.

·       Spring (March to May):
Spring is one of the most beautiful times for the Tilicho Lake Trek. The weather is mild, with daytime temperatures comfortable for trekking and cooler nights at higher elevations. The hillsides come alive with blooming rhododendrons, magnolias, and other wildflowers, creating a vibrant landscape against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks. This season is particularly rewarding for nature enthusiasts, as the forests are lush, wildlife is active, and the skies are generally clear. For those seeking both natural beauty and comfortable trekking conditions, spring is an ideal choice.

·       Autumn (September to November):
Autumn is considered the peak trekking season in Nepal, including the Tilicho Lake region. After the summer monsoon, the air becomes clean and crisp, ensuring some of the clearest mountain views of the year. Trekkers can enjoy stunning panoramas of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Tilicho Peak, and Manaslu. The weather is stable, with warm days for trekking and cold but manageable nights. Autumn is also the season of major Nepali festivals like Dashain and Tihar, providing trekkers with the chance to experience the rich cultural atmosphere in villages along the route.

·       Winter (December to February):
Although winter trekking is possible, it is not recommended for most trekkers. Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures at high altitudes make the Tilicho Lake Trek more challenging. Trails, especially around Tilicho Base Camp and Thorong La Pass, may be blocked by snow, and extreme cold makes accommodation less comfortable. However, for well-prepared trekkers with winter experience, the solitude of the trail and crystal-clear skies can make the experience rewarding.

·       Monsoon (June to August):
The monsoon season is the least favorable time to attempt the Tilicho Lake Trek. Trails can become slippery and dangerous due to heavy rainfall, and the risk of landslides is higher in the lower sections. Clouds and mist obscure mountain views, and the constant rain can make trekking uncomfortable. While the landscape becomes lush and green, most trekkers avoid this season for safety reasons.

For the best trekking experience to Tilicho Lake, spring and autumn remain the most recommended seasons, offering a perfect mix of comfortable weather, clear skies, and breathtaking Himalayan scenery.

Difficulty Level

The Tilicho Lake Trek is rated as a moderate to challenging trek, making it suitable for trekkers who are physically fit and mentally prepared for high-altitude conditions. The trek reaches 4,919 meters (16,138 feet) at Tilicho Lake and continues to Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters), which makes altitude one of the main challenges.

Trekkers typically walk for 6 to 7 hours per day on trails that vary from gradual ascents through forests and villages to steep rocky climbs and narrow ridges. The paths are well-trodden but can be rugged and uneven, especially in the higher sections. The side trip to Tilicho Lake involves trekking through steep scree slopes and exposed terrain, which requires caution and steady footing.

Another difficulty is the rapid change in altitude. Without proper acclimatization, trekkers risk suffering from altitude-related illnesses such as headaches, nausea, and fatigue. That is why rest days, particularly in Manang, are built into the itinerary to help the body adjust.

Despite the challenges, the trek is achievable for those with good physical fitness and preparation. Many trekkers with previous experience in Nepal or other mountain treks find the Tilicho Lake Trek to be one of the most rewarding journeys, as the challenges are matched by spectacular rewards in scenery and cultural encounters.

Physical Fitness and Requirements

Trekkers attempting the Tilicho Lake Trek should have a good level of cardiovascular endurance, strength, and stamina. The trek is not a technical climb, but the combination of altitude, long walking days, and rugged terrain demands preparation.

It is recommended to train at least 6–8 weeks before the trek, focusing on activities like hiking, jogging, cycling, or swimming to improve stamina. Practicing long hikes with a backpack helps simulate trekking conditions and strengthens leg muscles. Core and balance exercises are also beneficial for navigating uneven trails.

At higher altitudes, oxygen levels decrease, which makes even short climbs physically demanding. Trekkers should be mentally prepared for this challenge and pace themselves to avoid exhaustion. Hydration, proper nutrition, and rest are equally important for maintaining energy throughout the journey.

While the trek is suitable for moderately fit individuals, it is not recommended for people with severe respiratory or heart problems. Those new to trekking should build up hiking experience in lower altitudes before attempting this high-altitude adventure. A positive mindset, patience, and determination are just as essential as physical strength for completing the trek successfully.

Environment

The Tilicho Lake Trek offers one of the most diverse trekking environments in Nepal. The journey takes trekkers from lush subtropical valleys to barren alpine deserts, showcasing the natural and cultural variety of the Annapurna region.

In the lower sections, the trail passes through dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine, where waterfalls tumble down hillsides and birdlife is abundant. As the trek ascends, the landscape changes dramatically into alpine meadows and rocky terrain. Closer to Tilicho Lake, the environment becomes stark and almost desert-like, with bare cliffs and glacial valleys creating a dramatic atmosphere.

The region around Manang is particularly unique, as it lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna range. This creates dry, rugged landscapes with a distinct Tibetan-like feel. Along the trail, trekkers pass through traditional villages with flat-roofed stone houses, prayer flags, and monasteries, experiencing the cultural richness of the Manangi people.

Weather and Climate

The weather and climate during the Tilicho Lake Trek vary depending on altitude and season, and understanding these conditions is crucial for planning a successful trek.

In spring (March to May), the weather is mild and relatively stable. Lower regions can have daytime temperatures of 15°C to 20°C, while higher altitudes remain much cooler. Nights are cold, particularly near Tilicho Base Camp and Thorong La Pass, where temperatures can drop below freezing.

During autumn (September to November), weather conditions are similar but with even clearer skies, offering the best visibility of the Himalayan peaks. Daytime trekking temperatures are comfortable, while nights remain cold at higher altitudes, often between -5°C to 5°C.

In winter (December to February), temperatures at Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass can plummet well below -15°C, with heavy snowfall making trails more dangerous and sometimes impassable.

The monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rains to lower sections of the trek, making trails muddy and increasing the risk of landslides. Higher regions like Manang and Tilicho Lake, however, receive less rainfall due to the rain shadow effect, but visibility remains poor due to cloud cover.

Food and Meals

Food during the Tilicho Lake Trek is provided mainly by teahouses and lodges along the route. These establishments serve a mix of traditional Nepali and basic international dishes designed to provide energy and comfort for trekkers.

A staple meal is dal bhat, a wholesome plate of rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, and pickles, which provides long-lasting energy. Other common meals include fried rice, noodles, pasta, potato dishes, soups, and sometimes pancakes or bread. In lower villages, trekkers may also find Tibetan bread, momos (dumplings), and meat dishes, though vegetarian options are recommended at higher altitudes for better digestion and freshness.

At higher elevations, particularly in Tilicho Base Camp, food options become more limited due to transportation challenges. Meals often consist of porridge, boiled potatoes, noodle soup, and simple bread. Despite the simplicity, the food is filling and helps keep the body warm and energized.

Accommodation in Kathmandu and During the Trek

Before and after the trek, accommodation in Kathmandu is arranged in 3-star standard hotels, usually located in the vibrant Thamel district, which is the center for travelers. Rooms are provided on a sharing basis for groups of two or more, featuring twin or double beds, attached bathrooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and other basic facilities to ensure a comfortable stay. These hotels offer a cozy and welcoming atmosphere where trekkers can rest after long journeys, enjoy both Nepali and international meals, and explore nearby shops, cafés, and restaurants. For travelers who prefer more privacy, single rooms can be arranged at an additional cost. Staying in Kathmandu also allows trekkers to experience the city’s cultural richness, with opportunities to visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple).

During the trek itself, accommodation is mainly in teahouses and local lodges run by families along the trail. These teahouses provide basic but comfortable lodging with simple rooms that usually include twin beds, mattresses, blankets, and shared bathrooms. At lower altitudes, facilities may include hot showers and a wider variety of food options, while at higher elevations, lodging becomes more basic, often with limited amenities due to the remoteness of the area. Teahouse dining rooms also serve as social hubs where trekkers from around the world gather to enjoy meals, share experiences, and warm themselves by the fire.

In places like Manang, Pisang, and Jomsom, teahouses are relatively well-equipped with more comfortable rooms, electricity for charging devices, and a greater selection of meals. However, at higher points such as Tilicho Base Camp and Thorong Phedi, accommodation is much simpler, with basic bedding and limited food options due to the challenging logistics of the region. Despite the simplicity, the warm hospitality of the local people adds to the authenticity and charm of the Himalayan trekking experience.

Overall, the combination of comfortable hotel stays in Kathmandu and traditional teahouse lodging during the trek ensures trekkers enjoy both modern comforts and the cultural authenticity of life in the Himalayas.

Drinking Water

Access to clean drinking water is essential during the Tilicho Lake Trek, as dehydration at high altitudes can increase the risk of altitude sickness.

In the lower sections of the trek, water is available from taps, rivers, and village sources, but it is not safe to drink directly. Trekkers are advised to use purification tablets, water filters, or UV sterilizers. Many teahouses also sell bottled water, but prices increase significantly with altitude due to transportation difficulties.

For sustainability, trekkers are encouraged to carry a reusable water bottle or hydration bladder and refill it at lodges or streams, treating the water before drinking. Boiled water is also available at teahouses for a small fee.

Transportation

Alpine Club of Himalaya ensures safe, comfortable, and reliable transportation throughout your Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek.

  • Airport Transfers: Private car or van transfers are provided for airport pickup and drop-off in Kathmandu, ensuring a smooth start and end to your journey.
  • Kathmandu to Besisahar: Travel by private car offers comfort and flexibility while navigating the scenic route to the trek starting point.
  • Besisahar to Chame: A shared jeep service allows trekkers to cover this part of the route efficiently, reducing trekking time on less scenic road sections.
  • Jomsom to Pokhara: Private jeep transfers are arranged after the trek, offering a comfortable ride through the mountainous terrain.
  • Pokhara to Kathmandu: Travel back to the capital is via a tourist bus, providing an affordable and scenic journey along the Prithvi Highway.

All vehicles are well-maintained, driven by experienced local drivers, and scheduled to maximize safety, convenience, and sightseeing opportunities along the way.

TIMS and Permits

To trek to Tilicho Lake, one of the highest trekking lakes in the world, trekkers are required to obtain essential permits to ensure safety, preserve the environment, and support local conservation efforts. The two main permits necessary for the Tilicho Lake Trek are the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Here's an overview of these crucial permits:

1. TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) Card

The TIMS card is a mandatory permit for all trekkers in Nepal, designed to ensure trekkers' safety and help authorities track their movements in case of emergencies. It also plays a vital role in managing the flow of trekkers and monitoring the number of visitors in the Annapurna region. Both international tourists and Nepali nationals are required to have a TIMS card to trek in the Annapurna region, including the Tilicho Lake Trek.

Obtaining the TIMS card is straightforward. It can be issued at the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) office in Kathmandu or Pokhara, or through a licensed trekking agency like Alpine Club of Himalaya. The application process typically involves submitting a passport-sized photo, completing a brief form, and paying a small fee. For international trekkers, the TIMS fee is generally around USD 20, while Nepali nationals pay about NPR 100. Having a TIMS card is essential for trekkers, as it helps with search and rescue operations if needed and ensures trekkers are accounted for during their journey.

2. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

The ACAP permit is required for trekkers wishing to enter the Annapurna Conservation Area, which encompasses the entire trekking route to Tilicho Lake. The permit helps fund local conservation projects aimed at preserving the unique flora, fauna, and cultural heritage of the Annapurna region. The ACAP is mandatory for all trekkers, whether you’re heading to Tilicho Lake or trekking along other routes within the Annapurna region.

This permit can be obtained either at the ACAP office in Kathmandu or Pokhara or through a licensed trekking agency, such as Alpine Club of Himalaya, which can handle the application process for you. For international trekkers, the ACAP cost is generally around USD 30, while Nepali nationals pay approximately NPR 1000. This fee supports the conservation of the Annapurna area and its natural resources, including its endangered species and cultural landmarks.

3. Restricted Area Permit (If Applicable)

While Tilicho Lake itself does not fall under the category of a restricted area, some parts of the Annapurna Circuit, such as the Nar Phu Valley or the Manaslu region, may require additional permits known as Restricted Area Permits (RAP). If you plan to trek into these restricted zones, it’s essential to apply for the RAP in advance. However, this permit is not required for the standard Tilicho Lake Trek route.

The cost for a Restricted Area Permit varies depending on the specific region, ranging from USD 100 to 500 per week, depending on the area and the time of year.

Where and How to Obtain the Permits

Obtaining the TIMS card and ACAP permit is relatively simple if you’re trekking through a licensed agency like Alpine Club of Himalaya. They can handle the entire process for you, ensuring all paperwork is completed and you can focus on the trekking experience itself. If trekking independently, trekkers must go to the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Pokhara for the TIMS card and the ACAP permit at the Annapurna Conservation Area Project office.

Permissions and Restrictions

Trekking to Tilicho Lake requires trekkers to adhere to several regulations, especially those related to environmental preservation and cultural respect. The Annapurna region is protected under the ACAP, and trekkers must stick to marked routes and avoid venturing into restricted or prohibited zones.

It is also important to respect the local culture of the Manang people, who reside in the area. When trekking through villages or near monasteries, trekkers should always ask for permission before taking photographs and should be mindful of the customs and religious practices of the communities. Environmental responsibility is crucial: trekkers must avoid littering, leave waste, or damage the natural environment, in line with the conservation efforts supported by the ACAP fees.

Important Notes

l  TIMS and ACAP permits are required at various check-posts along the trekking route, and trekkers will be asked to show their permits at points like Besisahar, Dharapani, and other entry points.

l  Both permits are valid for the entire duration of the trek and must be kept with you throughout the journey.

l  While trekking independently is allowed, most trekkers prefer to travel with a licensed agency like Alpine Club of Himalaya to simplify the permit process and ensure all necessary documentation is in place.

Obtaining the TIMS and ACAP permits is an essential part of preparing for the Tilicho Lake Trek. These permits ensure that trekkers contribute to the sustainability and conservation of the Annapurna region while maintaining safety throughout the journey. By booking with a reputable agency, like Alpine Club of Himalaya, trekkers can streamline this process and focus on enjoying the stunning landscapes, local culture, and the adventure that awaits them in the heart of the Himalayas.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a crucial requirement for anyone embarking on the Tilicho Lake Trek. Given the remote nature of the trail, trekking at high altitudes, and the possibility of unforeseen events such as injuries, illness, or natural disasters, having comprehensive travel insurance provides peace of mind. It should cover a wide range of incidents, including medical emergencies, evacuation costs (especially if you need to be airlifted due to altitude sickness or injury), and trip cancellations.

It’s also advisable to ensure that your travel insurance covers high-altitude trekking, as not all standard policies include this. Alpine Club of Himalaya recommends securing travel insurance that includes medical evacuation and hospitalization coverage, as well as any necessary gear or equipment that could be damaged or lost. Always read the fine print to confirm that your insurer is aware of the specific risks associated with trekking at high altitudes and that your activities are covered.

Passport and Visa

For international trekkers, having a valid passport is essential to travel to Nepal for the Tilicho Lake Trek. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your arrival in Nepal. Regarding visa requirements, most travelers will need to obtain a tourist visa for entry into Nepal. Visas can be obtained either from your home country's Nepalese embassy or on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Tourist visas are typically issued for 15, 30, or 90 days, and you will need to provide a valid passport and a recent passport-sized photograph. Additionally, a visa fee will need to be paid upon arrival. It's essential to check the latest visa requirements before traveling, as regulations can change. Nepali visas are generally easy to obtain and can be extended, if necessary, but ensure that all documents are in order before departure to avoid delays or complications. If you're trekking with an agency like Alpine Club of Himalaya, they can assist with some of the paperwork for your visa and provide guidance on entry requirements.

Wi-Fi and Electricity

During the trek, most tea houses and guesthouses have limited electricity, usually supplied via solar power, so charging devices may not always be guaranteed. Some lodges offer charging points for a small fee. Wi-Fi availability is minimal or non-existent in remote areas, though in larger villages like Manang or Jomsom, you may find Wi-Fi at certain tea houses or lodges. Trekkers should plan to download maps, entertainment, or communication apps in advance.

Guide and Porter

Alpine Club of Himalaya provides an experienced English-speaking trekking guide and one porter for every two trekkers.

·        Guide: Leads the trek, ensures safety, monitors acclimatization, assists with navigation, and provides information about local culture, flora, and fauna.

·        Porter: Carries heavy luggage, allowing trekkers to walk comfortably with only a daypack.
The package includes the salary, food, lodging, and insurance for both guide and porter. Having a guide and porter enhances safety, comfort, and overall trekking experience, especially at higher altitudes.

Safety and Security

Alpine Club of Himalaya places the highest priority on trekker safety and security throughout the trek. Guides continuously monitor weather conditions and acclimatization, providing advice on rest or alternative routes whenever necessary. Local authorities are kept informed about trekking groups in remote areas to ensure timely assistance if required. Trekkers are strongly advised to follow the guide’s instructions, stay in designated accommodations, and respect local customs. The tea houses and lodges used along the trek are safe, hygienic, and regulated by local tourism authorities, ensuring a secure and comfortable stay.

Altitude Sickness and Preparations

Altitude sickness is a common concern when trekking at high elevations, particularly on challenging routes like the Tilicho Lake Trek. The trek takes you to altitudes of up to 4,949 meters (16,138 feet), where the oxygen level is significantly lower, and trekkers can experience symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, or shortness of breath. To minimize the risks of altitude sickness, it's essential to follow proper acclimatization procedures, such as gradually gaining altitude and taking rest days, like the acclimatization day in Manang.

Alpine Club of Himalaya provides expert guides who are trained in managing altitude sickness and ensuring your safety throughout the trek. If needed, we also arrange helicopter evacuation for quick rescue to Pokhara or Kathmandu in case of serious altitude-related emergencies.

Travel insurance that includes high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is highly recommended for all trekkers. Our guides will monitor your well-being, advise on symptoms, and provide assistance as needed to ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience. Proper preparation, such as staying hydrated, taking prescribed medications, and avoiding overexertion, can significantly reduce the chances of altitude sickness, making your Tilicho Lake Trek a memorable and safe adventure.

Evacuation Procedures

Alpine Club of Himalaya has well-established emergency evacuation procedures to handle unexpected situations. In severe cases, such as acute altitude sickness or other medical emergencies, helicopter evacuation is available. Guides are trained in basic first aid and carry emergency communication devices to maintain contact with rescue services. In remote areas, the team coordinates with nearby health posts and emergency response units to provide immediate support. Trekkers are strongly advised to carry travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation, which is a mandatory requirement for all participants.

I can’t recommend this trek enough. The travel agency took care of all details, and the team made sure we were comfortable throughout. The mix of landscapes, from lush valleys to snow-covered passes, was magical. Tilicho Lake was the highlight of my trip.
