Muktinath and Kagbeni Valley Trek cover half of Annapurna Circuit Trails and take you towards the ancient site of the Muktinath village. Perched on the high plateau on the Northern side of Pokhara. Muktinath is one of the oldest settlements in the country. Nestled on the laps of Giant peaks of Nilgiri, Tilicho, and Dhaulagiri. Kathmandu to Pokhara

The Muktinath and Kagbeni Trek start with a long drive from Kathmandu towards Pokhara. Following the rapids of the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers. From Pokhara head towards Nayapul, the starting point of the various trek in the Annapurna Region. Traversing across lush woodlands reach the village of Thikhedhunga. From Thikhedhunga traversing along the deep wilderness of magnificent oak and rhododendron forests, crossing river networks, pasture lands, and lush agriculture farmlands, sparkling clear streams reach the tiny village of Ghorepani.

Pokhara to Poon Hill

The next day head to Poon Hill, one of the best vantage points in the Annapurna region. Ascending on a well-maintained series of stairs, reach Poon Hill. From the vantage point witness Mountain peaks from Dhaulagiri to Annapurna to Machhapuchhre: Dhaulagiri I ( 8167m), Tukuche (6920m), Nilgiri (6940m), Annapurna South, Annapurna I (8091m), Hiunchuli (6441m), Machhapuchhre (6,993m) and Tarke  Kang (7193m). All standing at its grandeur basking in the morning rays of the sun and changing their colors. Next, head further down towards Tatopani. Tatopani is a village located on the Kali Gandaki corridor. Here soak in the healing waters of the Himalayan hot spring. Furthermore, head towards Ghasa traversing across high cliffs on rocky landscapes.

Poon Hill to Ghasa

At Ghasa head out for bird watching. All six species of Himalayan pheasants are found in only a few places in the country. Furthermore, the trek follows the east trail of the Kali Gandaki on forested trails of brown oaks, blue pines, and dozens of species of rhododendron. Reach the settlement of Tukuche. At Tukuche head out to explore the deepest The Kali Gandaki George the deepest gorge on the planet.

Head towards kali Gandaki

Continuing along the Kali Gandaki River Gorge, with marvelous views of Annapurna-I and Dhaulagiri further head to Jomsom. An ancient village perched on the banks of the mighty Kali Gandaki river. You can admire Himalayan peaks at such a close range and yet from a safe altitude of only 8800 feet. The region is not only the most popular trekking destination in Nepal but also the gateway to Upper Mustang. The forbidden Kingdom of Lo Manthang. 

Next, continue on the sandy footway on the western side of the Kali Gandaki riverbed. Following through a gap in the Himalayan barrier at the bottom of the deepest river canyon in the world. Along this section witness grandeur views of Tukuche, Nilgiri, and Annapurna massif along with some splendid landscapes and reach the village of Kagbeni. A picturesque village clinging over a cliff, facing the confluence of the Kali Gandaki River. Following the Kali Gandaki upstream on a desert landscape with views of dry hills and snowcapped mountains reach the settlement of Muktinath.

Kali Gandaki to Muktinath

Muktinath means the place of Nirvana and is home to the Muktinath temple as well as several ancient religious shrines. A sacred pilgrimage site to both Hindus and Buddhists. Nestled at the foothills of the might Himalayan pass of Thorong La. Explore the temple complex and bathe in the freezing waters. Furthermore, witness the spectacular landscape of the region. After exploring Muktinath retrace your steps back to Jomsom. The following day catches a morning flight to Pokhara. At Pokhara explore the wonders of the city and the next day head towards  Kathmandu.   

The diverse landscapes and cultures to be found along the trek route give a marvelous insight into the way of life of rural Nepalese people. Join us at the Alpine Club Himalaya for this unique and spectacular experience of the Annapurna region.

Entry and Permits: 

The following permits are required for trekking to Muktinath and Kagbeni Trek:

  • ACAP entry permit fee for foreigners: 3,000 NPR (Approx. US $30)
  • ACAP entry permit fee for SAARC nationals: 200 NPR

TIMS Permit:

  • NRP 1,000 per person for organized treks through an agency 
  • NRP 2,000 per person for independent trekkers (going without a guide or porter) 

Note: All the trekking permits are handled by the Alpine Club of Himalaya.

Meals and drinking water:

Along the Annapurna Region Trek, you will be provided with various Nepali, and Tibetan ethnic cuisines, and varieties of continental as well as western meals. The region has several tea-house along the trail and is run by local inhabitants providing basic and minimal facilities to luxury ones, where you will have an opportunity to taste various cuisines which you will miss it most of the trekking trails of Nepal. 

Annapurna Region is a plastic-free zone and has banned the use of bottled Mineral Water. However, accessible drinking water taps with untreated natural water are available along the trekking trail. Direct use is not recommended. You can refill boiled or cold filtered water at teahouses instead.

If you buy a water purification tablet, chlorine drops, utilize SODIS filtration procedures for further assurance and reducing plastic pollution.

Accommodation:

Tourist-friendly hotels, lodges, and local accommodations are available on trekking trails and, providing with basic accommodation to luxury and grandeur ones. Luxury hotels and teahouse are situated along the trail that suits your budgets providing comfortable beds with electric blankets, hot and cold shower, free WIFI, and many more. 

Teahouse along Annapurna region provides you with hot shower, western attached bathrooms and the rooms mostly include twin sharing beds as well as a single bed, with hygienic and clean atmosphere, good mattresses, a pillow, and blankets. 

Campsites are also available along the trail providing a special opportunity for campers to sleep under the stars.  

Best Time to Visit?

The best season for trekking in Annapurna Region is during autumn and spring.  

The months of September, October, November, March, April, and May are the best time to visit. These months are better in terms of visibility and climate conditions. 

During the autumn season, the months of September, October, and November are one of the best times for trekking in this region. Weather is clear bringing great visibility of the endless mountain ranges and lush green forest with warm temperatures, the nights are clear and is a perfect opportunity for stargazing.

The spring season of March, April, and May is also the best time to visit the Annapurna Region. The end of the winter season brings a change in the region, varieties of colorful blooming trees of the sub-alpine forest, high green pasture lands covered with wildflowers, mild temperatures, and clear weather. In this season you will witness herds of sheep and yaks grazing in the green high lands.    

Monsoon season is not favorable as the weather gets harsh and it’s hard to get around the country. So, monsoon season is mostly avoided by trekkers. 

In the winter season, it is impossible to visit Annapurna Region due to high snowfall covering most of the trails. 

Travel Insurance:

All clients participating in any activity must have travel insurance. Personal injury, death, hospital expenditures, repatriation fees, helicopter rescue, and any other disease covered by the insurance plan will be given. We highly advise you to acquire a comprehensive insurance plan from a trustworthy insurance company.

Passport and Visa:

Every client must have a valid passport from the return date with a 6 months. Nepalese consulate in your country or immigration office at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu will prior validity.

Itinerary

Kathmandu Valley

Upon arrival at the Kathmandu, Tribhuvan International Airport. A representative from the Alpine Club of Himalaya will assist you with your accommodation. Upon arriving at your hotel, rest for a while. Later join in for a short briefing regarding the trek. In the evening join in for a special dinner program where you will experience excellent Nepalese cuisine.

After breakfast, head on for a full-day sightseeing tour of the Kathmandu Valley. First head towards Durbar (Palace) Square, the epicenter of religious and cultural life, an area filled with old temples and historical significance with glorious old Newari architecture. Some of the sights include Kal Bhairav, Hanuman Dhoka, Taleju Temple, Kasthamandap, and Kumari Ghar; home to the Living Goddess.
Afterward, visit Swayambhunath Stupa, one of the oldest Buddhist stupas in the world, which is majestically set high on a hill overlooking Kathmandu Valley. Thereafter proceed towards Pashupatinath Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This massive temple complex sits alongside the banks of the holy Bagmati River. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the courtyard of the temple, whereas tourists can see the temple from the eastern side of the Bagmati River. Later visit Boudhanath, a Buddhist Stupa which is one of the largest in the world. This massive structure stands tall with four pairs of eyes each facing the four cardinal directions, watching for the righteous behavior of mankind and human prosperity. After exploring the valley head towards your accommodation. Later join in for a brief orientation regarding the trek.

Pokhara: Phewa Lake

After breakfast, head out on a long drive towards Pokhara. Following the winding roads of the Prithvi Highway crossing various settlements. Upon reaching Pokhara head towards your accommodation, after a brief rest proceed towards full sightseeing of the city.
Visit the deep narrow gorge of the roaring Seti River, Davi’s Falls a renowned waterfall of the region, and further explore the networks of Gupteshwar Cave and the Bat Cave. Also, explore the museums of the region. Later head towards Phewa lake and enjoy the sunset.

Nayapul

We begin our trek at Nayapul after 1-hour driving by private vehicle from Pokhara. After 15 minutes a short walk along the banks of the Modi Khola, we reach Birethanti (1015meters) a large village that has many shops and teahouses. From there, the trail continues through the village. The trail follows the north bank of the Bhurungdi Khola. Then the trail climbs steadily up the side of the valley to Hille at 1495m and after the short climb, we reach Tikhedhunga at 1570meters. Today’s walk offers a short and relatively easy day, during the journey which allows us to become used to the experience of trekking in Nepal. Overnight at guesthouse.Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The 41km/25 miles drive takes you across high hill sections with views of the greater Himalayas. Upon reaching Nayapul you will start your trek. Start by following a steep trail across the lush woodlands, after a while the trail drops to a bridge over a small stream to the village of Birethanti.
From Birethanti take the left branch of the trail on the west side of the bridge, as you progress you will reach the Annapurna Conservation Area Project Check post. Hereafter your ACAP permits are inspected head towards Birethanti.
Following the forested trail of bamboo, you will reach a large waterfall and a swimming hole, the village of Sudami. From here ascending a hill section up the side of the valley you will reach Hille. A brief walk from here will eventually lead you to the settlement of Thikhedhunga.

ghorepani
Ghorepani

Start by traversing along the deep wilderness and crossing the Thikhedhunga Khola on a suspension bridge. As you progress you will cross another river network of the Bhurungdi Khola on a large bridge at an elevation of 1520 meters. Next, you will be ascending a steep section of a well-maintained series of stone stairs, more than 3300 which eventually leads you to the
large Magar village of Ulleri nestled at an elevation of 2080 meters.

Furthermore, head past the pasture and lush agriculture fields and you will come across the
deep forest trails. Following the trail, you will reach Banthanti. From Banthanti, traverse across magnificent oak and rhododendron forests crossing several sparkling clear streams, a small ridge to another Magar village of Nangathanti at an elevation of 2460 meters. Along this section witnessed eight different species of Nepal’s national flower rhododendron. After a brief walk from Nangathanti, you will finally reach the settlement of Ghorepani.

Today wake up before dawn and head out towards the renowned vantage point of the PoonHill. The climb to the top takes around a couple of hours on an ascending trail with well-maintained series of stairs. Upon reaching the top witness views of the great landscapes of the deep wilderness and the snowcapped peaks. Mountain peaks from Dhaulagiri to Annapurna to Machhapuchhre: Dhaulagiri I ( 8167m), Tukuche (6920m), Nilgiri (6940m), Annapurna South, Annapurna I (8091m), Hiunchuli (6441m), Machhapuchhre (6,993m) and Tarke Kang (7193m). All standing at its grandeur basking in the morning rays of the sun and changing their colors.
After observing the wonderful Himalayas views, return to Ghorepani. After breakfast, continue the journey towards Tatopani. Following the forested route make a steep descent to Chitre at 2390m. From here the trail drops down through Sikha, along this section witness rows of terrace farmlands. Crossing Sikha, the trail further descends gently to the settlement of Ghara at an elevation of 1705 meters. Further steep descent of 500m takes you to the Ghar Khola where the trail crosses the river on a suspension bridge. Next, climb up above the Kali Gandaki River before crossing too. As you turn north, a short trek will bring you to the village of Tatopani.
Upon reaching Tatopani head towards the Himalayan hot water springs of the region. Relax and soak your aching muscles.

Today, the trail climbs up the Kali Gandaki gorge, considered to be the deepest in the world situated between the two 8000 meters peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Following the arid landscape, the trail rises gently up to Dana at 1400 meters, and onto Rupse Chhahara a renowned waterfall at 1550 meters. From here traverse across the eastern bank of the river, and you will reach Kopchepani. Next head towards the western side on a suspension bridge. After a short climb, you will eventually reach the tiny village of Ghasa.
Upon reaching Ghasa explore the village. Regarded as a paradise for bird watchers. The region is one of the few places in the country where all six species of Himalayan pheasants are found. Apart from that different species of native and migratory birds can be found. Cross over the quieter eastern bank for bird watching.

Start the trek by crossing the eastern side of the river. As you progress on the trail again cross the might Kali Gandaki river and head on an inclined trail towards the village of Larjung at 2560meters. As you progress you will reach the ancient settlement of Khobang with its narrow alleyways. A short trek from here will eventually lead you to the village of Tukuche, located in the Kali Gandaki Gorge. Upon reaching the village head out to explore the region.

Kagbeni

Continue along the valley, rising gradually before crossing over a low ridge. As you progress from the ridge section you will reach the famous settlement of Jomsom perched on the banks of the mighty Kali Gandaki river. Jomsom is a large, bustling settlement and it’s the administrative center of the region. The region has an airport, army camp, hotels, shops, banks, and government offices.
Next, continue on the sandy footway on the western side of the Kali Gandaki riverbed. The trail here provides a lovely view of Tukuche, Nilgiri, and Annapurna massif along with some splendid landscapes.
Kagbeni village situated on the main age-old Trans Himalayan salt trade route to Tibet is one of the oldest villages in the Himalayas. A picturesque village clinging over a cliff, facing the confluence of the Kali Gandaki River and Jhong Khola with green terrace farm, and sheer rock cliffs. Explore the narrow streets and visit various monasteries around. Also, get a true insight into the lives of the people.

Muktinath Temple

Today’s trek starts with a steep climb up the Jhong Khola valley leaving Kagbeni, then joining the direct trail to Muktinath just below Khingar at 3200 meters. From here the trail continues high above the Jhong Khola to the imposing village of Jharkot at 3500meters,

Further from Jharkot, traversing across high mountain landscapes on grey and brown hills with patches of shrubs you will finally reach the settlement of Muktinath. Upon reaching the area head out to explore around. In the evening bask in the views of the sunset.

jomsom
Jomsom

Muktinath means the place of Nirvana and is home to the Muktinath temple as well as several ancient religious shrines. A sacred pilgrimage site to both Hindus and Buddhists. The main pilgrimage normally takes place in September, but devotees, pilgrims, and saints visit the temple all around the year.
The Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has 108 waterspouts around it taking a dip in this holy water is believed to wash away all your sins and assist you towards liberation. Another attraction nearby is the Jwala Mai Temple where a spring and an eternal flame fed by natural underground gas are present. Also witness grand views of the landscape, the green apple orchards, snow white peaks on the backdrops of brown, grey hills. After exploring the temple complex retrace your steps back to Jomsom. Traversing across ancient chorthen on the banks of the dry river and various cave networks. Upon reaching Jomsom celebrate your success of the trek and the last night in the mountains.

Today you will take an early morning flight from Jomsom to Pokhara which takes around 30 minutes. On the flight witness grand views of the landscapes flying parallel to the mountain ranges. Upon reaching Pokhara stroll around the city and later visit various pubs and restaurants of the region.

After breakfast head towards Kathmandu valley following the winding roads of Prithvi Highway. Upon reaching Kathmandu head towards your accommodation. Later in the evening join in for a farewell dinner program that marks the end of your adventure.

    Recently we have done .. trekking which is most popular trekking among Hindu pilgrim. This is the famous pilgrimage site for Hindu, Buddhist Pilgrims and ascetic Sadhus . It offers good views of the mountains with spectacular and varied scenery on the way. The people of this part of Nepal are a mixture of Gurung and Magar ethnic groups in the lower stretches of the Kali Gandaki, Thakalis around Jomsom and people of Tibetan roots, the Lobas around Muktinath. Alpine planned our trek very well and guide Kamal was the best. Alpine is highly recommended and the best trekking agency in Nepal .
