Overview

Everest Base Camp Fly Back by Helicopter, following the footsteps of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay we take a thrilling steady climb of 2800m/9187 ft to 5545m/18193ft from Lukla to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patar (5545m), a viewpoint recognized as the best vantage point to see Mount Everest. After exploring the temples, shrines, bazaars and restaurants of Kathmandu we take an exciting mountain flight to Lukla and trek up the Dudh Kosi Valley, surrounded by the soaring peaks of Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru. It’s a steep ascent to Namche Bazaar, capital of the Kumbu Sherpas and then the trail passing Buddhist monasteries to have the views of Everest get closer every day. This trek is particularly strenuous as there are many ups and downs and the itinerary doesn’t allow us for proper acclimatization days.

Spending one more day in Namche Bazaar will help us get used to the high altitude and thinning oxygen. You can hike-up to Sagarmatha National Park and enjoy the sunrise over the Himalayas including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kongde and so on. Today’s trek start with a gradual climb to Duglha at the end of the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. From here, climb up a steep trail to Chupki Lhara, where we find an array of stones with prayer flags used as memorials to Scott Fischer (American mountaineer) and 10 times Everest submitter Babu Chiri Sherpa (Nepali mountain guide) who perished on a mission to climb Everest. The trail then eases off as we follow the valley to Lobuche. Overnight in Lobuche.

Day 09: Lobuche to Gorakshep (5170 m/16,961ft), visit Everest Base Camp (5364 m/17,594 ft) (6-7 hrs)

Take the trail to Everest Base Camp through the once vast Gorakshep Lake. Continue straight ahead, will come across the Indian army mountaineers’ memorials. The path from here can be misleading. Therefore, it is important to follow our lead Sherpa diligently. The walk is strenuous due to thin air in the high altitude. Pass through rocky dunes, moraine and streams before reaching the Base Camp. Upon reaching, we can see tents of mountaineers that stand out in bright colours against the monotony of earthy surroundings (especially in the spring). Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori are the mountains we can view from the base camp. Get back to Gorakshep for a good night’s rest. Overnight in Gorakshep.

Day 10: Gorakshep to Kalapatthar, back to Gorakshep, fly to Lukla by Helicopter (3-4 hrs trek)

Prepare for an early morning departure amid pre-dawn darkness and cold temperatures (-10 to -14 degrees Celsius). Moreover, there is always the potential for chilly winds which are quite common. Familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse tower are seen to the east even as Everest begins to reveal itself. Upon reaching Kalapatthar (5545-meter) that we get to see 360 degree up-close and formidable views of Mount Everest. Take nothing but pictures, and enjoy the magnificent mountain panorama. After that, return back to Gorakshep for a good night’s rest.

Those who visit Everest Base Camp today will have an early breakfast to start early as the hike takes longer than the hike at Kalapatthar. Descend down to Gorakshep and take a helicopter ride to Lukla. Fly over the serene waters of the Gokyo Lake which holds deep cultural significance for the Nepalese. After captivating the lake’s tremendous beauty, continue our helicopter ride to Lukla. Overnight in Lukla.
